A32 Calico (A.Fisher, 4-2) @ Pecos (M.Martynik, 2-4)

Calico 100 300 001 001 - 6 13 0
Pecos  202 010 000 000 - 5 13 0

W- H.Krist (1-1), Sv- B.Carpenter (1), L- W.Davis (2-2)
HR- Cal: O.Carnegie (13); Pec: G.Puccinelli (16)

Ollie Carnegie swats his thirteenth homer of the year in the top of the ninth, while Bob Carpenter closed out the game, as Calico wins their nineteenth in the opener of their three game series. Al Fisher got the start for Calico and got roughed up for five runs by the fifth inning, but stuck it out for eight innings after which he was removed for a pinch hitter in the ninth. Ollie Carnegie drew a two out, bases loaded walk to tie the game. George Puccinelli hit his sixteenth home run in the first, giving Pecos a 2-0 lead. He would have had a couple of sure doubles, but in each case, Calico centerfielder George Stumpf made circus catches to rob the slugger of a couple of big hits.

B32 Yucca (W.Wyatt, 5-1) @ Paducah (D.Boone, 1-1)

Yucca   114 000 002 - 8 11 2
Paducah 100 000 500 - 6 10 0

W- W.Wyatt (6-1), L- D.Boone (1-2)
HR- Yuc: P.Dunlap (2); Pad: B.Rosar (5)

Paul Dunlap leadoff homer in the first set the pace for Yucca to score six runs in the first three innings, but it only lasted until the seventh when Paducah batted around against Whitlow Wyatt to score five runs and tie the game. Yucca piced up two runs in the top of the ninth on a groundout by Ollie Bejma and a single by Joe Just, allowing Wyatt to finish the game and win his sixth. Buddy Rosar's two run homer capped off that big seventh for Paducah. Milt May reached base four times for Paducah, including a triple. Both clubs are sitting on top of the standings at 21-11.

C32 Monclova (A.Herring, 3-3) @ Algona (J.Berly, 3-3)

Monclova 000 000 000 - 0 6 1
Algona   100 000 00x - 1 6 1

W- J.Berly (4-3), L- A.Herring (3-4)

Linc Blakely's two out single scored Ed Longacre, and Jack Berly brought his good stuff to the ballyard, as Algona shuts out Monclova to move a game up on their rivals. Berly struck out three and walked two in getting his fourth win of the season. Art Herring took the loss, going seven and allowing five hits while striking out four and walking one. Monclova dropped back to .500 on the season.

D32 Sonora (P.McClaughlin, 0-1) @ Seneca (O.Judd, 1-5)

Sonora 010 030 000 -  4 13 3
Seneca 101 310 05x - 11 15 1

W- O.Judd (2-5), L- P.McLaughlin (0-2)
HR- Sen: H.Peel (1)

Seneca wins their sixth, and they did the only way they could; by scoring early and getting to the opponent's bullpen, something they have not been doing recently, while Oscar Judd held off Sonora for eight innings to pick up his second win of the year. Eddie Morgan reached five times, four on singles and once on an error. He scored three runs on the day. Sonora starter Pat McLaughlin cleared the bases with a double in the fifth to bring Sonora within one. Al Glossop doubled in a run to put Seneca back up by two, then they exploded for five runs to help nail down the win. Charlie Keller had three hits and a walk. Homer Peel hit his first home run of the year, and drove in three runs. Harry Taylor doubled, singled, walked and reached on a fielder's choice and also drove in three. Judd gave up four runs, one earned on twelve hits with three strikeouts and four walks. McLaughlin went seven and allowed six runs, three of them earned. He gave up twelve hits, struck out three and walked one.

A33 Calico (B.Kline, 0-1) @ Pecos (G.Washburn, 2-0)

Calico 300 002 000 - 5 10 1
Pecos  200 100 010 - 4  8 1

W- B.Kline (1-1), L- G.Washburn (2-1)
HR- Pec: S.Baugh (2)

First inning errors put crooked numbers on the boards for both clubs, with visiting Calico having the better inning, but it was walks given up by Pecos starter George Washburn in the top of the sixth that doomed the home club. Pecos had tied the game in the fourth on a solo home run by "Slingin'" Sammy Baugh. Calico starter Bob Kline got hold of a Washburn curve, and slapped it into center, moving Chuck Sheerin to third. Sheerin had reached on a one out single. Benny McCoy, already enjoying a good game with a first inning triple and a single in the second, singled again to score Sheerin and put runners at first and second. Malin McCulloch walked to load 'em up, then Jim Oglesby walked to bring in Kline. Down by two, Pecos scored one in the bottom of the eighth to make it a one run game again, but that would be as close as they got. Kline picked up his first win of the year, going eight and allowing four runs, three earned. He gave up seven hits, struck out one and walked three. Washburn went seven in getting charged with the loss. He gave up five runs, four earned, on ten hits while striking out four and walking six.

B33 Yucca (R.Barrett, 5-1) @ Paducah (A.Cohen, 0-0)

Yucca   203 300 021 - 11 18 0
Paducah 000 001 000 -  1  6 3

W- R.Barrett (6-1), L- A.Cohen (0-1)
HR- Yuc: P.Dunlap (3), J.Just (8)

Yucca pounds Paducah into the ground, taking sole possesion of first in the process with one game to go in the series. Yucca outfielder Paul Dunlap got his second start in a row after impressing with a tater in yesterday's game, and the youngster didn't disappoint, going 4 for 5 with a double and his third homer of the year. Chet Wilburn and Fred Koster also collected three hits on the afternoon. Yucca starter Red Barrett went seven to pick up his sixth win of the year. He allowed one earned run on five hits while striking out two and walking one. Alta Cohen got the spot start for Paducah and went five, allowing eight runs, five of them earned, on thirteen hits. He struck out one and walked two.

C33 Monclova (R.Lynn, 2-3) @ Algona (T.Olson, 2-2)

Monclova 102 000 020 - 5  8 2
Algona   020 000 010 - 3 10 3

W- R.Lynn (3-3), Sv- D.Brennan (1), L- T.Olson (2-3)

Harry Bassin's pinch hit single drove in Ham Schulte to cap off a two run eighth, giving Monclova the insurance runs they would need to top Algona. Ted Olson started for Algona, and he helped his own cause by singling in Sammy Bell in the bottom of the second. Bell would later score the second run of the inning on a fielder's choice to give the home club an early 2-1 lead. A pair of errors, coupled with four hits spelled two more runs for Monclova, as they re-took the lead. The added runs in the eighth iced it for the visitors. Red Lynn went seven to get the win, allowing two earned runs on six hits with a strikeout and two walks. Olson also went seven, allowing three earned runs on six hits while striking out three and walking two.

D33 Sonora (H.Smythe, 2-4) @ Seneca (M.Duke, 1-5)

Sonora 000 012 030 - 6  9 3
Seneca 101 000 210 - 5 12 3

W- T.Wilks (2-2), Sv- E.Riddle (2), L- F.Makosky (0-3)
HR- Son: S.Spence (5)

Easily one of the best ballgames this season...it had everything; ejections, injuries, a batter hit by a pitch, ninth inning drama. And of course, the "Musty Chuck" bobblehead that was given to the first 75 fans in attendance if they paid an extra 40 cents...Grab a cup of coffee, or a sandwich; this one's gonna take a while...It's important to note that Seneca won the opener of this three game series with Sonora. Important because Seneca has somewhat taken up residency in the cellar of the BBC. Today, they were battling to win their seventh game of the year, having already lost 26. So, here we go! Back to back doubles give Seneca a 1-0 lead after one, and this lead is increased to 2-0 in the third when Charlie Gelbert tripled and scored on a single by Charlie Keller. Lest we forget, Seneca catcher Johnny Pasek got ejected in the top of the second when Stan Spence led off the inning with a walk, which the feisty catcher contested. Apparently, he used one colorful metaphor too many, and was given the thumb by umpire Howard "The Hawk" Klem (no relation). In the fifth, Sonora barked back when Ox Eckhardt reached third on a two out single and an error. He scored on another error on what should have been an easy pop up to Gelbert at third. Echardt's single broke up a no-hit effort by Seneca starter Marvin Duke. Everyone's favorite catcher, Joe Schultz, reached base on a fielder's choice in the top of the sixth, and scored when Spence walloped his fifth home run of the year, giving Sonora a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Seneca caught a break, when pinch hitter Lou Scoffic hit a shot up the middle which carromed off the calf of Sonora starter Harry Smythe and into center field for a single. Smythe had to leave the game, as his calf had a welt on it the size of a grapefruit. Ted Wilks took the hill in relief and gave up a double to leadoff batter Eddie Morgan, scoring Scoffic to tie the game. Gelbert then singled to score Morgan, and Seneca had the lead back, and the sellout crowd of 280 were hootin' and a-hollerin'. Up 4-3, Seneca sent Frank Makosky to shut everything down. He easily retired Eddie Miller and Schultz to begin the top of teh eighth, then couldn't get anyone out after that, giving up a triple to Spence, an RBI single to Les Powers, a walk to Buck Fausett, and a two run double to Art Parks. 6-4, Sonora. However, Seneca was not ready to give up. In their half of the eighth, Al Glossop singled and reached second on an error. With two out, George Savino, who replaced Pasek at catcher, doubled to make it a one run game. Wilks then drilled Scoffic in the forearm to put runners at first and second. With the crowd just begging for a game-tying hit, Morgan grounded to short to end the inning. Makosky took the mound in the ninth to a chorus of boos (no exaggeration...there was a church choir in the stands, and they were booing like crazy), and though he gave up a pair of singles, he managed to get out of the inning unscathed. Elmer Riddle came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth for Sonora, and the first thing he does is walk the leadoff batter, Charlie Gelbert. Homer Peel flies to right, then Harry Taylor came up to pinch hit for Makosky. Taylor socked Riddle's 1-2 slider to the wall in left where Art Parks dazzled the crowd with a leaping, over the fence snowcone catch of the ball, robbing Taylor of a game winning home run. The next batter, Les Scarsella singled to center, moving Gelbert to third with the tying run and Glossop up. "Weird Al" drove the second offering by Riddle deep to center, but not deep enough as Eckhardt had a bead on it, and made the catch in front of the warning track to end the game. Smythe ended up going six and a third, allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking one. Duke went seven and allowed three runs, two of them earned, on four hits. He struck out two and walked two. Wilks gave up two earned runs in an inning and two thirds to get the win. Makosky gave up three earned runs in two innings on five hits and got charged with the loss. Sonora improves to 13-20, while Seneca drops to 6-27.

A34 Calico (H.Krist, 1-1) @ Pecos (J.Haley, 3-2)

Calico 301 100 000 - 5  8 1
Pecos  410 300 01x - 9 13 0

W- J.Haley (4-2), L- H.Krist (1-2)
HR- Cal: O.Carnegie (14)

Ollie Carnegie smacked his fourteenth home run of the year in the first to put Calico ahead 3-0, and Pecos responded with five runs over the next two innings, and they go on to whip the visitors in the finale of their three game series. Howie Krist got the nod to get the start for Calico, and he went five in taking one for the team. He gave up eight runs on nine hits, struck out two and walked three. Will Smith pitched three innings of relief and looked good, allowing one earned run on four hits with one walk. Pecos got three hit performances from leadoff hitter Oscar Grimes, who came up a home run shy of hitting for the cycle; and first sacker Jack Burns, who got on base with three singles and a walk. Teddy Ballgame reached base four times with two singles and two walks, while George Puccinelli singled and reached twice more on groundouts. Backup second baseman Anthony Dueker drove in three runs with a bases clearing double in the opening frame. John Haley went seven to pick up the win, but it was painful as he allowed five earned runs on eight hits. He struck out one and walked three. Pecos improves to 17-17 with the win, while Calico dropped to 20-14.

B34 Yucca (N.Kleinke, 4-1) @ Paducah (J.Bonetti, 2-1)

Yucca   000 000 000 - 0  5 2
Paducah 101 001 21x - 6 10 0

W- J.Bonetti (3-1), L- N.Kleinke (4-2)

Paducah starter Julio Bonetti shut out Yucca on five hits, while third baseman Merrill May scored three times, putting both teams in a flat out tie for first in the Badlands Baseball Circuit. Yucca reached third three times in the contest, and each time their runner died there. Meanwhile, Paducah relied on a bunch of singles, nine of them to be exact, with the only extra bse hit coming in the form of a triple by backup shortstop Ray Honeycutt. Norbert Kleinke started for Yucca and began things by giving up a single to Honeycutt, who was erased at second on a fielder's choice. Kleinke then walked the next three batters, and Paducah grabbed an early 1-0 lead, and the way Bonetti was throwing, it would be all they would need. Bonetti didn't strike anyone out, but walkee one, but it didn't matter. He was ON, and his club knew it. Kleinke ended up going seven and allowing five earned runs on nine hits. He struck out three and walked five.

C34 Monclova (J.Rogalski, 3-3) @ Algona (C.Fischer, 3-2)

Monclova 102 006 010 - 10 12 2
Algona   001 000 020 -  3  7 1

W- J.Rogalski (4-3), L- C.Fischer (3-3)

Monclova sends eleven men to the plate in the sixth, and score six big ones as they "go Lynwood" as "The Veet" use to say on Algona to take the series. Algona got three hits out of third baseman Joe Benning, all singles, and they resulted in two runs. Monclova's Chet Morgan was the beast that wouldn't go away, as he reached base five times, on two doubles, a single and two walks. He scored twice and drove in two. Joe Greenberg tripled in that big inning, but only Ed Coleman was on base at the time, so Joe could only muster one RBI on that big hit. Joe Rogalski started and went eight for Monclova, allowing three runs, one earned on seven hits. He struck out one and walked three. Carl Fischer went five in his start for Algon and gave up seven earned runs on seven hits with three Ks and a whopping six walks. Monclova improves to 18-16 on the year, while Algona drops to 17-17.

D34 Sonora (K.Wicker, 2-6) @ Seneca (H.Kelleher, 1-5)

Sonora 240 000 001 -  7  6 3
Seneca 004 000 17x - 12 16 2

W- O.Swigart (1-2), L- T.Wilks (2-3)
HR- Son: S.Spence (6); Sen: H.Taylor (2)

Sonora led 6-5 going into the bottom of the eighth, and they didn't know what hit them, as Seneca put seven on the board to pick up win number seven on the year in front of a bunch of die-hard fans who put up with the desert heat to witness the big win. Sonora starter Kemp Wicker had just left the game after going seven and allowing five runs, one earned, on nine hits.  Ted Wilks relieved and gave up a homer to Harry Taylor, pinch hitting for reliever Oad Swigart. Eddie Morgan reached on an error, then Les Scarsella and Homer Peel singled, followed by a double by Charlie Keller. Wilks left, and Emmitt Nelson came in. He wrapped up the inning by giving up a walk, two doubles and an infield single. Twelve men came up, and seven of them scored. Suddenly the game had turned from Sonora leading 6-5 to Seneca in front 12-6. Oscar Judd gave up one earned run in pitching the ninth, and that was that. Edward Taylor and Keller each had three hits on the day, both of them reaching on doubles.

A35 Monclova (B.Zuber, 1-1) @ Paducah (S.Johnson, 4-0)

Monclova 000 000 000 - 0 4 2
Paducah  002 021 00x - 5 9 0

W- S.Johnson (5-0), L- B.Zuber (1-2)
HR- Pad: P.Reese (3), J.Tyler (3)

Si Johnson tosses a four hit shutout, getting home run support from Pee Wee Reese and Johnny Tyler, as Paducah takes the opener of a three game series with Monclova. Wally Judnich contributed three singles and an RBI, but the game really belonged to Johnson, who struck out five on the afternoon with no walks given up. Bill Zuber didn't fare too well in his start, allowing five earned runs in his five innings of work. He gave up eight hits, struck out four and walked four. Paducah improves to 23-12, while Monclova drops to 18-17.

B35 Yucca (Y.Terry, 4-2) @ Pecos (E.Cook, 1-4)

Yucca 200 200 093 - 16 18 3
Pecos 115 244 01x - 18 15 2

W- E.Cook (2-4), L- Y.Terry (4-3)
HR- Yuc: P.Dunlap (4), J.Just (9); Pec: T.Williams (14), E.Phillips (2)

Joe Just hits a slam for Yucca. Ted Williams hits for the cycle for Pecos. George Archie gets four hits, including a double and drives in five for Yucca. Chester Wilburn reaches base six times for Yucca, gets three hits and scores three runs. Oscar Grimes, Eddie Phillips and Flea Clifton each drive in four runs on the day for Pecos. Phew, ma'am! The linescore spells out the story of this one. Pecos scored in each of the first six innings, and ended up not scoring in the seventh. After seven, Pecos led 17-4, which in any other normal universe would seem to be a proper whipping. Woody Davis went to the mound to pitch the seventh for Pecos, and as those folks who run marathons, ran into a wall. Yucca scored nine runs in the top of the eighth, all charged to Davis, and not that it would make him feel any better, but only seven of those runs were earned. Norm Branch took over with one out in the top of the eighth, and he managed to get the final two outs, then went out to pitch the ninth and gave up three runs. However Yucca ran out of gas by that point, and could not complete the incredible comeback, losing the contest by just two runs. Brutal. Just brutal.

C35 Algona (P.Malone, 0-0) @ Seneca (J.Beggs, 2-2)

Algona 000 000 000 - 0 9 0
Seneca 010 000 20x - 3 5 0

W- J.Beggs (3-2), L- P.Malone (0-1)
HR- Sen: C.Gelbert (2), B.Urbanski (2)

Joe Beggs does the job, shutting out Algona on nine hits to give Seneca their second straight win, a feat that has eluded them until now. Beggs struck out three in this one with no walks. Home runs from Charlie Gelbert and Billy Urbanski aided him in picking up the win. Pat Malone got the start for Algona, and he went the distance, allowing three earned runs on five hits while striking out two and walking four. Seneca improves to 8-27, while Algona drops to 17-18.

D35 Sonora (E.Nelson, 3-4) @ Calico (J.Gee, 4-3)

Sonora 000 100 000 - 1  4 2
Calico 023 000 00x - 5 10 0

W- J.Gee (5-3), L- E.Nelson (3-5)
HR- Son: S.Spence (7); Cal: E.Madjeski (2)

Johnny Gee was just superb for Calico, tossing a four hitter, while his club chased Sonora starter Emmitt Nelson to take the opener of this three game set. Gee gave up a homer to Stan Spence in the fourth, but Sonora could do little else as Gee scattered three singles and walked three. Calico got a little longball help themselves when catcher Ed Madjeski hit a two run jack in the second. They added on three more runs in the third on five hits, one of them a double, the first of two from Malin McCulloch. Nelson lasted four and gave up five earned runs on eight hits. He struck out two and walked two. Calico improves to 21-14, while Sonora falls to 13-22.

A36 Monclova (B.Bowman, 2-5) @ Paducah (K.Raffensberger, 5-1)

Monclova 122 000 000 -  5 10 2
Paducah  008 030 00x - 11 16 2

W- K.Raffensberger (6-1), L- B.Bowman (2-6)
HR- Pad: J.Tyler (4)

Paducah puts eight on the board in the bottom of the third, overcoming a 5-0 deficit, as they crush Monclova and secure their hold atop the league standings. Ken Raffensberg gave ip an unearned run in the first, followed by giving up a pair of runs in the second and two more in the third, and suddenly Paducah was down 5-0 with Monclova and their starter Bob Bowman feeling pretty good about things. All eight of Paducah's runs in the third came with two out, with Johnny Tyler's three run shot the big blow. Raffensberger gave up four earned runs in his seven inning outing on nine hits. He struck out five and walked six, continuing the trend we have been seeing of late with pitchers walking more batters than they are striking out. Bowman left after four, allowing eight earned runs on nine hits while striking out three and walking two. Red Lynn and Ralph Winegarner each tossed two innings of shutout ball to finish the game for Monclova.

B36 Yucca (J.Walkup, 0-1) @ Pecos (N.Andrews, 2-3)

HR- Yuc: J.Martin (5); Pec: T.Williams (15,16)

Yucca scores three in the seventh and three more in the eighth, as they overpower Pecos to even up the series and set up a rubber game scheduleld for tomorrow afternoon in the blazing sun. Ted Williams continues his red-hot hitting, clubbing two home runs to tie him for the league lead with teammate George Puccinelli. Williams drove in three and scored four times, as he also reached on a walk and a fielder's choice. Yucca got three hit games out of oufielders Johnny Hopp and leadoff batter Paul Dunlap, each of whom contributed a double. Yucca third sacker Joe Martin drove in three, two of them on his fifth homer of the year. Jim Walkup went eight to get the win. He gave up four earned runs on ten hits, struck out three and walked three. Nate Andrews didn't have it today, though he looked good through six. He ended up leaving after seven and a third with seven earned runs allowed on eleven hits. He struck out four and walked five.

C36 Algona (A.Piechota, 6-1) @ Seneca (O.Swigart, 1-2)

Algona 000 210 000 - 3 11 3

W- N.Hibbs (1-1), Sv- F.Makosky (3), L- A.Piechota (6-2)
HR- Sen: E.Morgan (1)

George Savino drove in two runs on a pinch double, capping a three run eighth to give Seneca a big win over Algona after trailing 3-2 after five. Seneca got a big game from Charlie Keller, who reached base five times with four singles and a walk. Seneca starter Oad Swigart left after giving up three earned runs in six innings. He allowed eight hits, struck out two and walked one. He was relieved by Norm Hibbs, who tossed two scoreless innings, and became the pitcher of record after his club went ahead. Algon starter Al Piechota was looking for win number seven, but fell short, allowing five runs, four of them earned. He gave up a whopping fifteen hits, struck out two and walked two. Seneca improves to 9-27, while Algona drops to 17-19 as we near the forty game stat break.

D36 Sonora (A.Benton, 1-0) @ Calico (E.Chapman, 4-2)

Ed Chapman pitched seven innings of ugly ball, but with three hit games from Leo Ogorek and John King, coupled with a home run from Jim Oglesby, he managed to pick up his fifth win of the year against a suddenly struggling Sonora club. sonora first baseman Gene Corbett scored three times after walking four times and reaching on a single in the first, accounting for all his teams' runs. Sonora starter Al Benton went five and was beat up for five earned runs on nine hits. Chapman went seven, allowing two runs, one of them earned. He gave up four hits but walked seven. Bob Carpenter tossed two scoreless innings of relief to bail Chapman out. King drove in three on his three hit afternoon.

A37 Monclova (A.Herring, 3-4) @ Paducah (J.Mooty, 1-3)

Monclova 000 000 002 - 2  8 1

W- J.Mooty (2-3), L- A.Herring (3-5)
HR- Pad: W.Judnich (4)

Wally Judnich's three run homer in the sixth broke open this one, as Paducah goes on to win it and sweep Monclova in the process. Paducah backup catcher Sam Holbrook doubled and singled twice, doing a good job calling the game to give starter Jake Mooty the complete game win. Mooty was tossing shutout ball until the ninth, when he gave up a two run double to Monclova second baseman Ham Schulte. He stayed in the game, retiring Jim Tabor on a bouncer to the box, followed by getting Ed Morgan to sky to center to end things. Mooty gave up eight hits, struck out four and walked three. Art Herring took the loss, allowing five earned runs on ten hits over eight innings. He struck out three and walked one. Paducah improves to 25-12, while Monclova drops to 18-19.

Pecos tops Yucca, handing Whitlow Wyatt his second loss of the season and giving Michael Martynik his third win and pushing Pecos above .500 to the delight of the 95 or so fans in attendance who braved the heat and a brief dust storm on "Cotton Candy Day" at the ball yard. Centerfielder Earl Bolyard reached base four times, slapping two doubles, a single, and a base on balls, while Ted Williams tripled and singled and drove in two. Martynik ran out of gas with one out in the top of the ninth, leaving the game with runners on first and second. Boots Poffenberger took over and got Fred Koster on a fielder's choice and ending it on a pinch fly out by Chester Wilburn, picking up his first save of the year. Wyatt went eight, and gave up three earned runs on eight hits. He struck out eight and walked one.

C37 Algona (J.Berly, 4-3) @ Seneca (O.Judd, 2-5)

HR- Sen: E.Taylor (3)

In an absolutely ridiculous contest, Seneca pulled off an unlikely victory as they overcome a 13-2 lead and in the process they earn a sweep of the series and have now won four straight.Ed Morgan, Charlie Keller and Ed Taylor each had three hits on the afternoon, which was interrupted in the bottom of the third by rain, which fell for about an hour and a half. Seneca catcher George Savino and Ed Taylor each drove in three, while Charlie Gelbert reached base four times with a single and three walks. Two errors, two singles and three walks given up by Oscar Judd in the first led to a fast 5-0 Algona lead, causing three fans in the pavillion seats to leave in disgust. Things got worse in the third when Algona put up eight big ones, sending twelve men to the plate. However, there must have been something in the rainwater, as Seneca exploded for six in the fifth, and five in the sixth (there's gotta be a song in there somewhere!), and suddenly the game was knotted up. Hank Camelli tripled for Algona to begin the eighth, and he scored two outs later on a single by Hall Lee, putting the visitors up 14-13. Seneca put runners at first and second with one out in their half of the inning against reliever Pat Malone, when Eddie Morgan tripled to right. Linc Blakely couldn't field it cleanly, letting the ball get away from him allowing the fleet footed Morgan to score the third run of the inning. Frank Makosky took the hill and threw a scoreless inning to finish this one off and earned his fourth save of the season. Phew, ma'am!!

Bob Latshaw picked the perfect time to hit his first home run of the year, putting it over the centerfield fence with the score tied in the bottom of the ninth to win it for Calico. Sonora jumped on the scoreboard early, getting all their runs in the first, capped off with back to back jacks from Stan Spence and Gene Corbett off starter Al Fisher. Fisher wasn't ready to quit just yet, as he jumped all over John Hubbell's change up, drilling it for a double in the third. He scored an out later on an infield single by Jim Oglesby. George Stumpf tripled in the fourth and this led to another run, then Fisher struck again, this time socking a two out, two run triple to tie the game and set up Bob Latshaw for his dramatic game winning clout in the ninth. Fisher went the distance to pick up his fifth win. He gave up four earned runs on eight hits and struck out three. Hubble went eight and a third, allowing five earned runs on nine hits. He struck out six and walked one.

Back to back homers in the sixth were followed by a home run from starting pitcher Reggie Grabowski in the seventh, giving Paducah five unanswered runs. After Sonora pushed one run across in their half of the seventh, Paducah iced the game with three more in the ninth. Grabowski went eight and allowed three earned runs on seven hits while walking one. Kemp Wicker saw his record drop to 2-7, after getting ripped for five earned runs over five and a third on seven hits. He struck out two and walked two. Paducah improves to 26-12, while Sonora drops to 13-25.

Ted Williams went 0 for 4, ending his season best ten game hitting streak. Algona right fielder Lynn King went three for four, and scored twice, while outfileder Linc Blakely launched his second homer of the year in the second to get the scoring machine going for his club. He gave up three runs, two of them earned, allowed four hits, struck out one and walked four. Algona improves to 18-20, while Pecos falls to 19-19.

Yucca comes up with four runs in the bottom of the ninth to steal game one of three between the two second place teams in the league. The runs came fast and often in this one, as both teams scored three in the first, with Yucca adding four more in the second to take a quick 7-3 lead. Both clubs put up a run in the fourth, then Calico scored five times in the sixth, getting help when George Stumpf reached second on a two out error by Lou Vezilich. This opened the door for Ed Madjeski's triple that capped the scoring in the inning for Calico. With the score now at 9-8, Yucca made it a tie game on Babe Herman's RBI double. Calico took advantage of another Yucca error in the top of the seventh, and they came away with three runs to take a 12-9 lead. Howie Krist had entered the game for Calico in the sixth, and was in his fourth inning when he gave up a run on a one out double by Vezilich, who moved to third on a wild pitch. He was driven in by Fred Koster's single, and we had a one run game.Pinch hitter Johnny Hopp singled to left, and Krist was given the hook in favor of Joe Mulligan. Chester Wilburn came up, and the shortstop drilled a double in the gap to score two and win the game. Wilburn socked a home run to open the bottom of the first, and had singled and scored a run in the second. Joe Martin and Joe Just also had three hits on the afternoon. Tommy Reis went two scoreless innings to pick up the win.

Fourteen innings of ball played in 100 degree heat...What more do you want, sports fans??!!! Seneca centerfielder Charlie Keller had a very good day at the plate with three doubles and five runs batted in, but the day belonged to Monclova, as Ed Coleman went four for seven, missing the cycle by a triple, while Joe Becker, Harry Bassin and Ham Schulte all turned in three hit performances. Monclova scored four in the fifth to tie things up, went ahead by a run in the seventh, made it a two run lead after eight, then reliever Mike Ryba gave up two in the top of the ninth to tie things up, sending the game into extras. Both clubs scored in the eleventh, then Seneca took the lead in the top of the fourteenth on back to back doubles from Billy Urbanski and George Savino. Norm Hibbs entered teh game to pitch the bottom of the fourteenth, and had the bad luck of allowing four straight one out singles to lose the game. Bob Bowman went two and allowed one earned run in picking up the win.

Sonora explodes for six runs in their half of the seventh, breaking a 2-2 tie and pulling an upset over the first place Paducahs. And just like many big innings, all six runs came with two out. Paducah starter Joe Heving retired Ox Eckhardt and pinch hitter Art Parks to begin the inning, then gave up four straight singles before getting replaced by Linville Watkins, who kept giving up hits, beginning with a single to Gene Corbett and followed by a killer triple by Mickey Haslin. Sonora starter Emmitt Nelson became the pitcher of record, and his replacement Pat McLaughlin pitched the final two innings, tossing shutout ball while Sonora tacked on one more run in the eighth. Nelson allowed one earned run on eight hits and struck out three. Heving took the loss after going six and two-thirds. He gave up five earned runs on ten hits while striking out four and walking one. George Puccinelli punched out home run number 17 in the top of the eighth to tie the game at 4-4. Pecos starter Earl Cook faced Lynn King with two out and a runner on first in the bottom of the ninth, and King sliced a 2-2 offering down the line in right for an RBI double. Mulligan lost the game and saw his record drop to 2-2. Chester Wilburn connected for three singles for Yucca. Norbert Kleinke went nine and allowed one earned run on nine hits as he received the "no-decision." Big offense turned in by both teams, with Seneca apparently taking out their frustrations on Monclova pitchers Joe Rogalski and Ralph Winegarner to even this three game series at a game apiece. Scoring six runs in the first inning, Seneca looked like this game was in the bag early. Doubles from Homer Peel, Charlie Gelbert and starting pitcher Hal Kelleher, coupled with an error by Monclova left fielder Joe Greenberg gave the Senecas some breathing room. However, Monclova bounced back with single runs in the first and second, and things weren't looking so rosy for the club that came into the game with a record of 10-28. With Rogalski gone after six, Monclova reliever Ralph Winegarner walked his way into giving up four runs in the seventh and another four in the eighth. Kelleher left the game after seven, and Marvin Duke took a turn on the hill, and went a disastrous two innings in which he took it for the team, allowing six earned runs on nine hits and a walk. Good thing his club was ahead 15-3 at the time. Ed coleman had a good game for the losing team, collecting five hits, all singles, and driving in two. Joe Gantenbein and Marty Marion also contributed three hits apiece for Monclova. Charlie Keller had three hits for Seneca, but apart from him, seven teammates each had two hits, while catcher Johnny Pasek scored four runs. Seneca improves to 11-28, while Monclova falls to 19-20 with one game to go before the stat break.

Tony Governor had a three hit game for Sonora, including two triples. Les Powers came up a triple shy of hitting for the cycle, scoreing twice and driving in four. Harry Smythe had little trouble with stifling the Paducah offense, going the distance and allowing one earned run on five hits. He struck out three and walked two. Danny Boone took it in the shorts in his start for Paducah. He allowed eight earned runs in seven innings, and got rocked for thirteen hits. He struck out one and walked one.

Carnegie's home run in the eighth, his sixteenth of the year, tied the game at 5-5. He hit his third of the game in the eleventh, only to see Yucca tie the game in the bottom of that frame thanks to a two base error. Yucca catcher Joe Just had been given the day off, but he came in to pinch hit with a run in and runners at the corners in the bottom of the fourteenth. Just hit the second pitch he saw off reliever Italo Chelini into the dirt beyond centerfield, and the ball game was over. Joe Martin and Alex Hooks each had three hits in the game for Yucca.

Catcher Joe Just drove in two more runs on a double to the gap in the bottom of the sixth, and the Sonora lead was cut to one. Sonora starter Elmer Riddle hung tough, leaving for a pinch hitter in the top of the ninth. Ted Wilks took over and gave up nothing more than a walk in the bottom of the ninth to earn the save. Fern Bell had two hits and reached on a fielder's choice for Sonora, driving in four runs on the afternoon. Riddle allowed three earned runs on nine hits, struck out two and walked one. George Hader went five and gave up five runs, four of them earned as he took the loss. He allowed six hits, struck out one and walked three.

A pair of six game winners square off, and Algona gets the breaks, putting up a five spot in the eighth to give Al Piechota win number seven on the year. Ken Raffensberger was cruising, tossing seven innings of scoreless, three hit ball. In the eighth, things began to unravel for the crafty lefty. With one out he gave up singles to Buddy Blair and pinch hitter Coaker Triplett. He got leadoff hitter Lynn King to whiff on a wicked slider, then Ed Longacre tripled to the gap in center to score two runs and give Algona the lead. Joe Benning lifted what looked like an easy pop-up to Al Smith at second, but he flubbed it, and Longacre came in for the third run of the inning. Mickey Heath doubled Benning in, then scored on a single by Linc Blakely, ending Raffensberger's day. Meanwhile, Al Piechota kept Paducah at bay all afternoon, going eight and allowing one earned run on four hits. He had some trouble with his control, striking out one and walking six, but those walks didn't come back to haunt him. Raffensberger suffered his second loss of the year, going seven and two thirds and allowing two earned runs on eight hits. He struck out three and walked one.

Pecos starter Boots Poffenberger had shut out Seneca through eight, but his shutout dreams went down the drain after Glossop singled, then scored an out later when Johnny Pasek singled and reached second on an error by centerfielder Morris Sands, sending this one into extras. Pecos reliever John Haley returned to the mound for his third inning of work, and just gave up one single too many. Good relief work from Oad Swigart and Horace Lisenbee kept Pecos off balance. Pecos starter Joseph Shaffer was roughed up something fierce in this one, allowing nine earned runs on twelve hits in three and two thirds. Third baseman Oscar Grimes had three hits to make the Pecos highlight reel. Like others recently, he came up just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.

Marty Marion doubled to plate Jim Tabor to cap a two run fifth for Monclova, but in the bottom of the sixth, Bob Latshaw homered to right, and after starter Al Fisher reached on a fielder's choice, Leo Ogorek doubled in the second run of the inning, giving Calico a 6-2 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Ollie Carnegie swatted his 18th home run of the year, tying him with George Puccinelli, and Calico led by five. Tabor doubled in a run in the eighth, capping the scoring for Monclova on the day. Fisher went eight and gave up three earned runs on eleven hits. He struck out four and walked one. Making things worse is that the runs came with two out, as Wicker retired pinch hitter Vince Sherlock and Chester Wilburn on pop-ups to third baseman Buck Fausett. Outfielder paul Dunlap walked, then Joe Martin was hit by a pitch. Ollie Bejma doubled both of them in, and then scored on a single by Babe Herman. Wicker went to the showers, and Elmer Riddle finished off the inning by getting Lou Vezilich on a routine grounder. Newly acquired catcher Bill Baker went five for five with a triple for Algona, while Ed Longacre collected three hits, including a double, but these efforts were for naught, as Paducah got a two run jack from Weintraub in the top of the ninth followed by a solo shot from Wally Judnich off reliever Don French who had just taken the hill, sending the game into extra innings. Johnny Johnson took the mound in the eleventh for Algona, and promptly walked Weintraub, who ended the day a double short of hitting for the cycle. Judnich popped to second, then Merrill May hit a pinch single to left. Robert Porter hit into a fielder's choice, putting runners on first and third with two out. Catcher Sam Holbrook singled to right to score Weintraub with the eventual game winning run. It happened to be the last at-bat for Holbrook, as he has been called up to the big club as we approach the one-third mark of the season. paducah sent Ken Raffensberger to pitch the ninth after tying the game in the top of that inning. He responded with two scoreless innings, and ended up with the win. Linville Watkins set down Algona in order ion the bottom of the eleventh to earn the save.

Babe Herman's error in the first led to a three run inning, which Monclova added to in the fifth, as they hold off Yucca in a close one and in the process deny the visitors a spot all alone in first place. Yucca starter Norbert Kleinke walked leadoff batter Joe Greenberg in the bottom of the first and then got Ed Coleman to fly out to right. Chet Morgan walked, then Joe Mack lifted a fly to Herman, where the ball bounced off his shoulder, allowing both baserunners to score. Mack ended up on second, and came home on a single from Ham Schulte. Yucca put a run on the board in the third, but Monclova got it back in the fifth on an RBI single by Chet Morgan. In the top of the eleventh, Ted Williams sent a screamer over the centerfield fence to give Pecos a 6-5 lead. Reliever George Washburn was in his second inning on the hill, and he struck out Fern Bell to begin the bottom of the eleventh. Buck Fausett doubled, then Spence drove it deep to left, and the game was over. Spence ran around the bases with his cap in his hand, as the 83 fans in attendance cheered lustily.
