Games 17-31
A17 Seneca (B.Logan, 0-0) @ Yucca (W.Wyatt, 3-0)
Seneca 000 010 000 - 1 3 0
Yucca 200 003 00x - 5 12 1
W- W.Wyatt (4-0), L- B.Logan (0-1)
HR- Yuc: F.Koster (1)
All Yucca and Whitlow Wyatt in this one, as the crafty righty goes the distance and allows one earned run on just three hits, earning his fourth win with no losses and giving Yucca their tenth win of the season. RBI singles by Babe Herman and Joe Just opened up a 2-0 lead in the opening frame off eventual losing pitcher Bob Logan. He settled down over the next four innings, but got no run support from his team, apart from a run thanks to a throwing error by Wyatt in the fifth that scored Harry Taylor. Back to back doubles by Herman and Just made the score 3-1, then two outs later, Fred Koster hammered Logan's curve ball into the dirt behind right field for a two run homer. Logan left after going six and allowing five earned runs on eleven hits.
B17 Monclova (R.Lynn, 1-2) @ Pecos (J.Shaffer, 0-0)
Monclova 010 003 100 - 5 11 4
Pecos 013 200 00x - 6 6 1
W- J.Shaffer (1-0), Sv- J.Haley (1), L- R.Lynn (1-3)
HR- Mon: J.Greenberg (2); Pec: G.Puccinelli (13)
What more can be said about the Pooch?? This guy is going to hit thirty or more home runs this year! He drove in five on the day, smacking a three run shot in the third, then doubled in two in the fourth. Joe Shaffer went six after going from a 6-1 lead, to allowing three runs in the top of the sixth to make it a two run ball game. Woody Davis took over in the top of the seventh, and this looked like a bad move after Joe Greenberg smashed hit second pitch over the right field wall to make it a one run game. However, Davis settled down big time after that to toss two innings, and he was followed by John Haley who pitched the ninth in a manner that made the home crowd nervous after he walked the first batter he faced before retiring the side. Shaffer gave up seven hits, struck out two and walked one. Red Lynn left after giving up five earned runs over five innings on six hits with four Ks and three walks.
C17 Sonora (H.Smythe, 1-2) @ Algona (J.Berly, 1-2)
Sonora 010 010 811 - 12 13 1
Algona 010 030 000 - 4 8 2
W- H.Smythe (2-2), L- J.Berly (1-3)
HR- Son: E.Miller (3)
Algona led 4-2 until it all fell apart in the top of the seventh. Sonora sent fourteen men to the plate in that inning, with Art Parks getting ragged in the dugout over making two outs in that frame. Jack Berly took the brunt of all that offensive firepower, allowing nine runs, seven of them earned over six and a third. He gave up eight hits, struck out two and walked six, watching his record fall to 1-3. Harry Smythe picked up the win for Sonora, going seven and allowing four earned runs on eight hits while walking two. His record improved to 2-2 on the year.
D17 Calico (A.Fisher, 2-1) @ Paducah (K.Raffensberger, 3-0)
Calico 000 000 000 - 0 4 4
Paducah 000 001 00x - 1 4 2
W- K.Raffensberger (4-0), L- A.Fisher (2-2)
Ken Raffensberger became the league's second four game winner, as he tosses a four hit shutout with the help of four Calico errors. Two of those errors came at the ends of centerfielder George Stumpf, who made back to back circus catches with bases loaded and no out in the second to rob Paducah of a pair of sure extra base hits. He also caught the last out of the second for good measure. Then, Stumpf taketh away with his glove, committing an error on the first batter to come up in the bottom of the third for Paducah, then committing the lone error that cost his team the win, when he misplayed a ball that carromed off his shoulder to score Wally Judnich who himself reached base on an error charged to catcher Ed Madjeski. Incredible action on the field today on "Chug-a-lug" night at the ball park.
A18 Seneca (O.Judd, 0-3) @ Yucca (R.Barrett, 2-1)
Seneca 000 000 000 - 0 4 1
Yucca 000 230 00x - 5 10 1
W- R.Barrett (3-1), L- O.Judd (0-4)
HR- Yuc: B.Herman (4)
Red Barrett tossed a four hit shutout, while Babe Herman's two run homer in the fifth served to put away the hapless Seneca nine in the second of four between these two clubs. Oscar Judd gave up four earned runs in the game and left after six. He allowed eight hits and walked four. Herman doubled in a run in the fourth before flexing his muscles with his fifth inning tater. Lou Vezilich doubled twice and singled in the contest. The season has barely started, yet Seneca already finds themselves nine games out of first, and they will have to make some moves in this duffer's opinion.
B18 Monclova (J.Rogalski, 1-2) @ Pecos (G.Washburn, 2-0)
Monclova 000 002 100 - 3 10 1
Pecos 000 000 000 - 0 5 0
W- J.Rogalski (2-2), L- W.Davis (1-1)
Pecos reliever Woody Davis plunks Monclova pitcher Joe Rogalski in the sixth, setting off a bench clearing brawl and a small fire in the bleachers. Amazingly, neither Davis nor Rogalski were tossed from the game, but three bench jockeys in the Monclova dugout and Pecos leadoff hitter William Homan were tossed. Adding more pain to the situation, Pecos starter George Washburn had to leave the game after five, when he twisted his ankle legging out a groundout. Davis pitched the sixth and promptly gave up a pair of doubles to Chet Morgan and Milt Galatzer, and you should have seen the look on his face when he gave up a walk to the next hitter, Joe Mack. He got Marty Marion to pop up and El Breese to ground out before his 1-2 fastball got away from him and hit Rogalski right in the shorts, causing the big rhubarb which was fueled in the stands by ten cent beer night, as several fights broke out and one dumber than dumb fan set his part of the bench on fire. Monclova drops to 9-9 on the year, while Pecos improves to 12-6.
C18 Sonora (K.Wicker, 2-3) @ Algona (T.Olson, 1-1)
Sonora 000 000 000 - 0 11 1
Algona 220 100 20x - 7 12 1
W- T.Olson (2-1), L- K.Wicker (2-4)
Ted Olson tosses the third shutout of this afternoon, scattering eleven hits as Algona whips Sonora to put both clubs in a tie in the standings with identical 8-10 records. Three Algona batters had three hits on the day, with Linc Blakely accounting for a pair of doubles. Buck Fausett and Mickey Haslin each had three hits for Sonora. Kemp Wicker went five and allowed four earned runs on eight hits to get the loss.
D18 Calico (B.Carpenter, 0-0) @ Paducah (J.Mooty, 0-2)
Calico 110 321 000 - 8 16 2
Paducah 001 220 40x - 9 16 1
W- L.Watkins (3-0), L- I.Chelini (2-2)
HR- Cal: O.Carnegie (8); Pad: P.Reese (2)
Bob Carpenter's bid to win his first game of the year is thwarted as Paducah puts up a four spot in the seventh and make it stick in an exciting win at the Paducah Flatlands Ball Yard and Vulture Petting Zoo. Calico led 2-1 when they rallied for three runs in the top of the fourth with two out. In the fifth, Calico got an extra pair of runs when Ollie Carnegie led off the inning with a solo blast, followed by three straight singles which scored Butch Myers. Benny McCoy reached third on an error in the sixth, scoring on a double play to make it an 8-5 game and Carpenter was feeling good. Dark clouds appeared on the horizon however, as with one out in the bottom of the seventh, Albert Smith singled and scored on a double from Butch Weis. This chased Carpenter, and Ital Chelini took the hill and gave up a triple to Pee Wee Reese to make it a one run game. Merrill May singled in Reese, then after reaching third on a Wally Judnich single to right, scored on a fielder's choice, giving Paducah a one run lead. Linville Watkins had come in to the ball game to pitch the seventh, and stayed in the rest of the way, going three scoreless to earn the win. Buddy Rosar had four hits for Paducah, while Calico backstop Ed Madjeski had four hits for his club. Both players won a pair of socks from Paducah Men's Shop, located inside Nasty Nick's Ol' Time Bar and Ice Cream Parlour (not kidding!!).
A19 Seneca (M.Duke, 1-3) @ Yucca (N.Kleinke, 2-1)
Seneca 000 100 200 - 3 12 1
Yucca 021 324 00x - 12 18 3
W- N.Kleinke (3-1), L- M.Duke (1-4)
HR- Yuc: J.Just (2), J.Martin (2)
Seneca takes another pounding despite gettinga four hit game from third baseman Charlie Gelbert. Yucca went on a scoring rampage in innings two through six. Joe Just and Joe Martin went yard, punishing the last place Senecas for a 12-1 lead going to the seventh. In that inning, Seneca managed to score a pair thanks to a single from shortstop Billy Urbanski, but unfortunately they could not put up any more runs, losing their sixthteenth game of the season. On the Yucca side, George Archie had four hits including a double. Babe Herman, Joe Just and Ollie Bejma each collected three hits, with only Herman hitting all singles. Norbert Kleinke went seven to get the win, allowing three earned runs on ten hits. He struck out one and walked four. Marvin Duke got lit up for eight earned runs in his four innings of work. He gave up ten hits. Yucca imnproves to 12-7.
B19 Monclova (M.Ryba, 1-0) @ Pecos (J.Haley, 2-0)
Monclova 200 100 600 - 9 9 1
Pecos 010 000 000 - 1 8 2
W- M.Ryba (2-0), L- J.Haley (2-1)
Monclova takes batting practice in the seventh, putting six across the plate to rough up Pecos in game three of their four game series. Pecos starter John Haley couldn't get any of the first five batters to come up in that inning, getting yanked in favor of Joe Shaffer who gave up singles to the first two batters he faced before getting Ham Schulte on a fielder's choice. Amazingly, only Joe Greenberg had more than one hit for Monclova, punching out a pair of singles. Winning pitcher Miky Ryba went the distance, allowing one unearned run on eight hits. He struck out three and walked one. Haley allowed eight runs, six of them earned in six plus. He gave up six hits and six walks.
C19 Sonora (E.Nelson, 2-2) @ Algona (C.Fischer, 1-1)
Sonora 000 000 130 - 4 13 3
Algona 100 020 44x - 11 14 2
W- C.Fischer (2-1), L- E.Nelson (2-3)
Agona outscores Sonora 8-4 over the final three innings to improve their season record to 9-10 and go a game up on their visitors. Sonora used four relievers in the seventh and eighth, giving up five walks, hitting a batter and committing two errors to contribute to their downfall. Buck Fausett and Les Powers had three hits each for Sonora, each hitting a double. Joe Benning reached base five times for Algona, getting three singles and two walks. Carl Fischer went seven and allowed one earned run to get the win. He gave up nine hits, struck out two and walked one. D19 Calico (J.Mulligan, 0-0) @ Paducah (R.Grabowski, 1-1)
Calico 010 110 000 - 3 6 1
Paducah 001 110 001 - 4 10 1
W- R.Grabowski (2-1), L- J.Mulligan (0-1)
Johnny Tyler picks up three hits to help Paducah win the ball game, and ruin the chance for Joe Mulligan to pick up a win in his first start for Calico. But it was his final at-bat that did Calico in, as he drew a walk with the bases loaded to score Al Smith with one out in the bottom of the ninth. It was Mulligan's sixth walk of the day. Reggie Grabowski went the distance to improve his record to 2-1. He gave up three earned runs on six hits while striking out three and walking four. Paducah improves to 13-6, while Calico falls to 9-10.
A20 Seneca (H.Kelleher, 1-3) @ Yucca (Y.Terry, 2-1)
Seneca 221 000 000 - 5 8 0
Yucca 004 210 10x - 8 15 3
W- Y.Terry (3-1), Sv- P.Page (1), L- H.Kelleher (1-4)
HR- Yuc: J.Martin (3,4)
Seneca loses a 5-0 lead, as Yucca scores four in the third, then add four more along the way to hand Seneca their fifth loss in a row. Joe Martin homered in back to back plate apperances as part of a four hit afternoon. Yank Terry went seven and allowed four earned runs on six hits to get the win. He struck out five and walked four, while Phil Page tossed two scoreless innings to pick up his first save. Hal Kelleher was touched for seven earned runs in five innings on the hill. He allowed thirteen hits with one strikeout and two walks. Yucca goes ten up on Seneca with a record of 13-7.
B20 Monclova (D.Brennan, 0-0) @ Pecos (E.Cook, 1-2)

W- N.Branch (2-0), L- A.Herring (2-2)
HR- Mon: H.Nowak (1); Pec: T.Williams (8,9)
Ted Williams banged out five hits with two home runs, driving in three, while the hottest slugger in the league, George Puccinelli won the game with a thirteenth inning single to move Pecos in a tie for first at least for now with Yucca and Paducah. Monclova was down 4-2 in the top of the ninth when Hank Nowak hit a two run pinch home run to tie the ball game. Norm Branch took over for Ed Cook, who had started for Pecos and went ten, allowing four earned runs on ten hits. Branch tossed three beautiful innings of no-hit ball, allowing only one batter to reach on a walk. Art Herring took the loss after going two and a third with four hits allowed, with the single to the Pooch being one hit too many.
C20 Sonora (E.Riddle, 0-0) @ Algona (J.Johnson, 0-3)
Sonora 003 000 114 - 9 18 2
Algona 000 001 010 - 2 6 2
W- E.Riddle (1-0), L- J.Johnson (0-4)
HR- Son: S.Spence (4)
Sonora scores three in the third to open the scoring in this one, and they added six more over the final three innings to trounce Algona in the finale of their series. Sonora shortstop Tommy Irwin collected five hits in the game, winning a free all-wool suit for his efforts, while leftfielder Fern Bell reached base five times with three hits, including a double, drawing a walk, and hitting into a fielder's choice. He drove in three runs to lead his club. Elmer Riddle won his first game, tossing eight innings and allowing two unearned runs on five hits. He struck out six and walked five. Johnny Johnson has had nothing but bad luck recently, and in his start went seven to take the loss, giving up four earned runs on twelve hits. Both clubs are now 9-11 on the year.
D20 Calico (J.Gee, 3-1) @ Paducah (J.Heving, 0-2)

Paducah 001 002 01x - 4 9 2
W- J.Heving (1-2), L- J.Gee (3-2)
Joe Heving tosses a four hit shutout to lead Paducah to a sweep of Calico, and putting them in first by themselves with a record of 14-6. Heving struck out three and walked two in earning his first win of the season. Two of the hits he gave up were doubles. Calico's Johnny Gee pitched a heck of a game, though he got the loss. He went eight and allowed two earned runs on nine hits while striking out three and walking three. Paducah is now riding a seven game win streak.
A21 Pecos (N.Andrews, 2-1) @ Paducah (S.Johnson, 2-0)
Pecos 000 005 120 3 - 11 18 0

HR- Pec: T.Williams (10), G.Puccinelli (14)
Teddy and the Pooch continue to cause havoc against league pitching, and they did it again in this one, as Puccinelli goes deep in the tenth to give Pecos the win, and put both teams in a tie for first. Pecos starter Nate Andrews didn't figure in the win, but he will go into the record books as being the first pitcher this year to strike out ten or more in a game, whiffing twelve in seven innings. He gave up eight earned runs, however, on eleven hits. Ted Williams had a four hit day, giving him a total of 37 on the year, which leads the league. He's batting a cool .430 on the year. Puccinelli had a three hit game, driving in four on the day, while Jack Burns and "Slingin'" Sammy Baugh singled three times each for Pecos. Paducah's Wally Judnich tripled as part of his three hit day, driving in two, while Robert Porter drove in three with a bases-clearing double in the fifth. Boots Poffenberger went three scoreless innings and picked up the win as the pitcher of record. Julio Bonetti went two and a third, allowing two earned runs in taking the loss.

HR- Sen: C.Keller (1)
Seneca comes home and gets beat up there, dropping to 3-18 and wondering when this downfall will ever stop. Algona scored seven runs on just six hits, but a deadly error by Charlie Keller allowed them to pound Seneca for four big runs in the fourth. Homer Peel had a three hit day for Seneca in a losing cause, but he connected for two doubles, while Keller made up for his miscue to swat his first homer of the year.First baseman Les Scarsella had a three hit afternoon and also reached on an error. Losing pitcher Joe Beggs dropped to 1-2 on the year, going five and allowing five earned runs on six hits while striking out four and walking four. Al Piechota picked up his fourth win, going eight and two thirds and allowing four earned runs on twelve hits while striking out two and walking one. John Owens pitched a third of an inning to pick up his second save of the year.
C21 Monclova (B.Bowman, 1-3) @ Sonora (J.Gonzales, 0-0)
Monclova 000 020 000 - 2 10 0
Sonora 200 000 10x - 3 8 0
W- J.Gonzales (1-0), L- B.Bowman (1-4)
With the game tied at two in the bottom of the seventh, Sonora starter Joe Gonzales was kept in the game with a runner on and one out, and he came through in the clutch with a single to put runners on first and second. Mickey Haslin hit into a fielder's choice to put runners at the corners, then Buck Fausett singled in Vern Richards from third, giving Sonora the win in the first of four with Monclova, and in the process, put both clubs in a tie with records of 10-11. Gonzales ended up pitching a complete game, allowing two earned runs on ten hits while striking out four and walking one. Bob Bowman went eight and allowed three earned runs in getting the loss. He gave up eight hits with foour strikeouts and three walks. Catcher Joe Becker had a three hit day for Monclova, all singles.

HR- Yuc: J.Just (3); Cal: G.Stumpf (3), O.Carnegie (9)
Calico whips out the bats to put up six runs in the bottom of the eighth, breaking a three-all tie and keeping Yucca at thirteen wins, one off the pace of Paducah and Pecos. Ollie Carnegie had three hits, two RBI and walked twice on the afternoon, chalking up his ninth home run of the year for good measure. Yucca's hard hitting third baseman Joe Martin singled in his first at-bat, doubled in his second, tripled in his third, then flied out to center in his final at-bat, ending his bid for becoming the first player to hit for the cycle this year. Jim Walkup went seven and a third in taking the loss. He allowed five earned runs on eight hits while striking out six and walking four. Ed Chapan went eight in getting his third win. HR- Pec: T.Williams (11), G.Puccinelli (15)
The Teddy and Pooch traveling salvation show rolls on, but it doesn't do much to stop a four run Paducah eighth, as Ken Raffensberger racks up his fifth win of the season to put Paducah alone at the top of the standings. Williams and Puccinelli bookended their homers, Ted hitting his in the first, and George doing deep in the ninth for the only Pecos runs of the game. With the score knotted at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Robert Porter found the gap in center for a one out triple. Paducah played safe, as Albert Smith grounded to short with Porter holding the bag. George Washington came in to pinch hit for Raffensberger, otherwise we would have seen a pitching matchup between Raffensberger and Poffenberger, but alas, this was not to be. While Washington was at the plate, he dodged a wild pitch uncorked by starter Mike Martynik, scoring Porter and giving Paducah a 2-1 lead. Washington popped to first to end the inning. Martynik pitched into the bottom of the eighth, but left with one out after Pee Wee Reese walked, stole second, reached third on an error on the steal, then scored on a sac fly by Merrill May. Johnny Tyler walked to end Martynik's day, and the aforementioned Poffensberger took the hill. He promptly gave up singles to Gene Hasson and Buddy Rosar. Wally Judnich bounced to shortstop Sammy Baugh who slinged it over the firstbaseman's head for a two run error. Raffensberger gave up one earned run in seven innings, allowing four hits while striking out four and walking two. Julio Bonetti pitched two innings to get the save. Martynik went seven and a third, and put up three's the rest of the way, allowing three earned runs, three hits and striking out three and walking three.
B22 Algona (J.Berly, 1-3) @ Seneca (B.Logan, 0-1)

HR- Alg: J.Benning ()
Seneca wastes no time in giving up runs, and despite a late rally they are unable yet again to come up with a win, as Algona powers their way to their eleventh win of the year. Joe Benning homered and doubled as part of his four hit game for Algona. Lynn King had three hits as did Buddy Blair. Seneca got three hit games ouf of Charlie Keller and Homer Peel. A two out error in the bottom of the eighth opened the floodgates for Seneca, as they singled their way to score six runs. In that inning, they had seven hits, and were aided by Algona's second error of the inning, making it a three run game. Algona sent struggling pithcer Johnny Johnson to mop things up, and he did, going an inning and a third to pick up the save. Seneca starter Bob Logan went two and gave up six runs, three of them earned. Jack Berly got the nod for the start for Algona, and he responded by going six and picking up the win on four hits, with three strikeouts and five walks. Seneca now 3-19 on the year, while Algona improves to 11-11.
C22 Monclova (A.Herring, 2-2) @ Sonora (H.Smythe, 2-2)
Monclova 000 070 000 - 7 11 2
Sonora 000 010 032 - 6 12 2
W- A.Herring (3-2), Sv- D.Midkiff (), L- H.Smythe (2-3)
Sonora almost pulls this one out, but come away a buck shy in a game that went from a whisper to a scream. The first four innings were a scoreless pitching duel between starters Art Herring for Monclova and Harry Smythe for Sonora. The fifth inning was completely different, as Monclova got a pair of singles to start the inning, followed by a double from Herring. Jim Tabor reached second on a throwing error by Eddie Miller, and Joe Greenberg dribbled an infield single. Smythe retired Milt Galatzer and Ed Coleman, then couldn't get anyone out from there, and after Marty Marion reached on a single and an error that moved him to second, Smythe's day was done. Sonora rallied for three in the eighth and got back to back triples with no out in the ninth, but couldn't scratch out another run against Monclova reliever Dick Midkiff, who finished the game by giving up one hit and striking out a batter in his one inning of work, earning the save.
D22 Yucca (W.Wyatt, 4-0) @ Calico (A.Fisher, 2-2)
Yucca 001 000 000 - 1 4 2
Calico 005 000 00x - 5 8 2
W- A.Fisher (3-2), L- W.Wyatt (4-1)
All scoring in the ballgame occurs in the the third; Yucca puts up a run when Henry Schluter scores on a two base error, then Calico drops a five spot in the bottom of the inning, and that's how this one ended. John King's two run double capped the Calico third. He had three hits on the day. Calico starter Albert Fisher tossed a complete game four hitter, allowing one unearned run and improving his record to 3-2. In the process, he denied Yucca starter Whitlow Wyatt's bid for a 5-0 record. Whyatt went seven and allowed five earned runs on six hits. He struck out four and walked two.
A23 Pecos (W.Davis, 1-1) @ Paducah (J.Mooty, 0-2)

Paducah 010 000 150 - 7 12 0
W- W.Davis (2-1), Sv- N.Branch (2), L- J.Mooty (0-3)
Pecos big man George Puccinelli collides on a fly ball with dimunitive shortstop and future hall of fame quarterback Sammy Baugh, sending both men to the clubhouse doc with minor injuries, and while Paducah had a big five run eighth, it wasn't enough to pull this one out, as Pecos eeks out a win to pull even with the home team at 15-8 on the year. Pecos had three triples on the afternoon, one of them by Flea Clifton, who led the team with three RBI. Al Smith had three hits in the game, including a double. Both starters were roughed up, with Paducah's Jake Mooty getting the worst of it. He went six and gave up eight earned runs in taking the loss. Woody Davis went seven and a third in picking up the win, allowing six earned runs on eleven hits with four strikeouts and five walks. Norm Branch struck out two in picking up the save.
B23 Algona (T.Olson, 2-1) @ Seneca (O.Judd, 0-4)

Seneca scores big in the first and second, with Charlie Keller capping off the scoring with a three run blast, giving Seneca their fourth win of the season. Keller added a double and wound up with four ribbies in the game. Homer Peel and Charlie "Chalo" Gelbert each had three hits, all singles. Ted Olson got the start for Algona, and after giving up six runs in the early going, hung around to go five. He gave up ten hits, struck out four and walked one. Oscar Judd went the distance for Seneca, giving up three earned runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking five in picking up his first W of the season.

Red Lynn went all the way to pick up the win, despite some control problems, walking seven on the afternoon. Lynn also showed he can take care of himself at the plate, collecting three singles and an RBI on the day. Sonora's second sacker Mickey Haslin had the ball clank off his glove three times today, all by the third inning. when he came up in the bottom of the third, he tried to atone for his miscues by drawing a walk. This wasn't to be his day however, as he got caught trying to steal with his club down 5-0. Kemp Wicker got the start for Sonora, and went seven, allowing five runs, none of them earned. He gave up six hits, struck out six and walked two. Pat McLaughlin pitched in relief foor Sonora and he allowed four earned runs in one and two thirds on seven hits while striking out three.

Yucca first baseman George Archie connects for four hits, including three straight doubles, while Red Barrett scatters eight hits in going the distance, leading Yucca to a big road victory against Calico. Calico's leadoff batter Benny McCoy reached third twice, once on a triple, but in both circumstances he was left there. He and Butch Myers were the offensive stars for Calico today, as each had a pair of hits. Barrett struck out one in his route-going performance, improving his record to 4-1. Italo Chelini took the loss, leaving after eight and allowing three earned runs on ten hits with one walk.

Paducah first baseman Phil Weintraub had a day, going five for five to win a suit, with a tie and suspenders, while socking two homers and driving in the eventual winning runs, so you know HE had a busy day, nearly single-handedly leading Paducah to a win and even better, first place by themselves in the BBC. Ted Williams doubled and scored in the eighth to make it a one run game before Weintraub did the job in the bottom half of that inning to give his club a four run cushion heading to the top of the ninth. With one out and a runner on, newly acquiared third baseman Oscar Grimes put one in the seats to make it a two run game. A single and a strikeout later, Bernard Cobb reached on an error, sending reliever Alta Cohen to the showers with two on and two out. Cohen had just entered the game in relief of starter Reggie Grabowski, and came just one grounder away from finishing this one up. Instead, Si Johnson got the nod to close it out, and he did, retiring Lloyd Russell on a bouncer back to the box to earn his first save. Grabowski went eight and allowed three runs, one of the earned. He gave up six hits, struck out one and walked two, improving his record to 3-1. John Haley took the loss, toughing it out for seven and two-thirds and giving up six earned runs on thirteen hits while striking out two and walking two.

Seneca drops their twentieth of the season, as they get roughed up by Algona before a crowd of a couple hundred, give or take. Things looked bad for them right from the get-go. Starter Marvin Duke began the game by retiring leadoff batter Lynn King on a can o' corn fly ball to left. Coaker Triplett singled to left to spoil the perfect game, and by the time pitcher Carl Fischer grounded to first, Seneca found themselves down 4-0. They fought back to score two of their own in the first, thanks to a double from first baseman Harry Taylor. Then they made it a one run game after Charlie Keller reached second on an error and scored on a single by Al Glossop. In the top of the fourth, Algona put a three spot on the board thanks in part to an error by Harry Taylor, which opened the door for Algona to bat around. Algona Mickey Heath walked four times and scored twice. Ernie Horne played third today for Algona and had a pair of hits including a double and drove in three runs to lead the team. Harry Taylor led his club with three hits including two doubles. Duke lasted just four innings, allowing six earned runs onseven hits. He struck out two and displayed his wild side with six walks. Horace Lisenbee pitched four terrific innings in relief of Duke, allowing one earned run on two hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Fischer went the entire route, improving his record to 3-1. He allowed three earned runs on nine hits while striking out seven and walking two.

Emmitt Nelson was nursing a 1-0 lead heading into the top of the fourth, when Monclova put up two runs to take the lead on the strength of a pair of doubles and a walk. Jim Tabor doubled in Milt Galatzer in the top of the seventh to complete the scoring. Rogalski allowed one earned run on six hits. He struck out six and walked one. Mike Ryba tossed a scoreless inning to pick up his first save.

Ollie Carnegie homers to end this one, as Calico evens their ledger at 12-12 on the year. Bob Latshaw contributed three hits to the win, including a triple. Norbert Kleinke got the start for Yucca, and he responded by tossing eight innings and allowing one earned run on seven hits while striking out five. He was removed from the game in the top of the ninth with two out and nobody on, with the score knotted at 1-1. Pinch hitter Ollie Bejma, who had been given the day off to give backup second baseman Vince Sherlock some playing time, singled to keep the inning alive. However, leadoff batter Paul Dunlap grounded to short to end the inning. Phil Page walked the first batter he faced, and Ed Remorenko reached on a fielder's choice. Ben Huffman flyed to right for out number two, then Bobby Mattick reached on an infield single, bringing up the pitcher's spot. Ollie Carnegie was sitting this one out for the same reason as Bejma, but was called on to pinch hit, and he delivered big time, sending the third pitch he saw from Page over the centerfield sign. Calico starter Johnny Gee picked up the win to improve to 4-2. He gave up one earned run on eight hits while striking out seven and walking three.

Algona plates four in the late innings to blow open a tight game, and catch Monclova in the standings in the opener of a four game set. Both clubs are now 13-12, and are struggling to carve out a place in the middle of the pack. Algona used the long ball to break up a 3-2 ballgame in the eighth. Pinch hitter Mickey Heath belted a three run shot in that inning, and Ed Longacre hit his first an inning later to put the game on ice. Jack LaRocca went seven to pick up his first win. He allowed two runs, one earned. He gave up just three hits, struck out one and walked one. Bill "Goober" Zuber took the loss, his first, leaving the ballgame after six and allowing three runs, one of them earned. He gave up seven hits, struck out two and walked one.

Paducah ties the ballgame in the ninth, then wins it in the tenth, as they sock it to a stunned Sonora club who had jumped out to a fast 5-1 lead. Sonora sent nine men to the plate in the first, and with the help of an error by Paducah third baseman Merrill May and a two run double by Art Parks, found themselves with a nice four run lead. Paducah erased all that with a pair of runs in the fourth, followed by a three spot in the sixth, and Sonora was now down 6-5. Sonora took the lead in their half of the seventh on an RBI single by shortstop Eddie Miller, but the game was tied in the ninth on an infield single by May that scored George Washington. Paducah loaded them up with two out in the top of the tenth, and that man May came through again, dumping a single to left to score Al Smith with the eventual game winner. May had three hits on the day with two runs batted in. Wally Judnich also had three hits, including his third homer of the year. Eddie Miller drove in three for Sonora. John Hubbell got the start for Sonora and ended up with the no-decision. He went seven and allowed six runs, three earned, on ten hits while striking out three and walking one.The loss went to Ted Wilks, who went three and gave up the final two runs. He allowed six hits, struck out two and walked one. Joe Heving started for Paducah, leaving after going six and a third and allowing seven runs, four of them earned. Calico second baseman Benny McCoy had three hits including a double and scored three runs, including the game winner. Jim Oglesby also had three hits for Calico. Frank McCosky pitched a scoreless eighth for Seneca, who were down 5-4 at that point. They tied the ballgame in the ninth on a single by Charlie Keller that scored Ed Morgan. Hall Kelleher went seven for Seneca and got the no-decision. Joe Mulligan got the win, being the pitcher of record after giving up the tying run in the ninth. Ed Chapman got the start for Calico and went eight, allowing one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts and five walks as he also got the no-decision.

Yank Terry tosses a four hit complete game, which would have been a two hit shutout if he hadn't given up a home run to Sammy Baugh in the top of the ninth. Yucca happy to take th win though, as it puts them in a tie with Pecos at 15-10. Terry allowed two earned runs, struck out four and walked six. Yucca outfielders Lou Vezilich and Fred Koster each had two hits and two RBI to lead their club. Ed Cook got the start for Pecos and ended up taking the loss after going six with six earned runs and six hits allowed. Piechota's three hits led all batters in the game, while Coaker Triplett had a single and a double, driving in three on the afternoon. The fans got their money's worth, except for the win, but they saw three big innings between these two clubs, with Paducah having the final word, scoring four in the tenth to improve to 18-8. Robert Porter had four hits including two doubles, scored three times and drove in a run for Paducah. Gene Hasson was one of three Paducahs with three hits. He drove in four runs on the afternoon. Buddy Rosar and Al Smith were the other two Paducah players with three hits in the ballgame. Sonora catcher Joe Schultz had a three hit game, scored two runs and reached on a fielder's choice. Both starters went six. Dan Boone got the start for Paducah and he gave up four earned runs on eight hits with one strikeout and three walks. Elmer Riddle gave up six earned runs on a whopping twelve hits, striking out one and walking three. Ted Wilks took the loss, going one and two thirds and giving up five earned runs on four hits and five walks. "Awful, just awful," cried a little girl of about four being carried out of the ballpark by her daddy. Fisher added a single in his next at bat, ending up two for three from the plate. On the mound he went the distance, giving up one unearned run on four hits, while striking out seven and walking two. Just had driven in a run earlier in the game with a sixth inning single. He ended up with three ribbies on the day. Yucca shortstop Chester Wilburn had three hits to lead both clubs. Phil Page got the start for Yucca, but had too leave the game with an injury in the eighth. He went seven and a third and gave up three earned runs on nine hits, struck out three and walking three. The win went to reliever Tommy Weis, who finished the game and allowed an earned run on three hits while striking out one. Pecos starter Nate Andrews went seven in taking the loss. He left after giving up the jack to Just with no one out in the bottom of the eighth, finishing with five earned runs on eleven hits. He struck out two and walked one.

Algona scores in four straight innings, while Jack Berly tosses a complete game three hitter to lead Algona to its third straight win against Monclova. The home crowd got excited when Monclova opened the scoring in the second when Chet Morgan led off with a triple and came home on a single from Joe Becker. Unfortunately, that was all the scoring the Monclova fans would get today on "Lovers Blanket" day, a promotion that could've used a few more minutes in the thinking department, as the game was played in nearly one hundred degree heat. Buddy Blair singled and advanced to second on a single by Berly in the top of the third, then both base runners move up ninety feet on a wild pitch by Monclova starter Art Herring. Lynn King brought home Blair with a sac fly to left, then Berly scored on a double from Joe Benning. Algona added single runs over the next three innings to cement the win. Berly improved to 3-3, giving up one earned run while striking out five and walking one. Down 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Sonora palted two to make a game out of it as Fern Bell doubled, scored on a triple by Buck Fausett, who in turn scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Gene Corbett. No Sonora runners reached third after that, while Paducah added an insurance run in the ninth on a triple by Pee Wee Reese. May had three hits for Paducah, while Rosar drove in three. Corbett walked three times for Sonora. Both starters went the distance in this one. Julio Bonetti got the start for Paducah and allowed two earned runs in getting the win. Calico was down 2-0 until they put three on the board thanks to George Stumpf's fourth home run of the year, and they add one more which came in handy as they edge a frustrated Seneca club that outhit them 10-5. Homer Peel doubled and singled three times for Seneca, scoring twice but was unable to drive anyone in. Whitey Miller hit a pinch home run in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 4-1 Calico lead. they would need that run, as Seneca put up a run in the top of the ninth when Peel reached second after singling to Miller in center, who then kicked the ball for an error which allowed Les Scarsella to score. With two out and Peel on second representing the tying run, Calico reliever Joe Mulligan got the dangerous Charlie Keller to fly out to center to end the ball game. "A redeeming catch for sure!" beamed Miller afterward. Italo Chelini went seven and picked up the win to improve his record to 3-3. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits and one walk. Mulligan went two to earn the save, his fourth of the year. Oscar Judd went six and gave up three earned runs on just three hits. He struck out three and walked five, as his record dropped to 1-5.

Whitlow Wyatt pretty much did it all today, tossing a five hit shutout, hitting his first home run of the year, and becoming the second pitcher in the league to strike out at least ten batters in a game. Joe Just opened the scoring in the second as he drove a changeup from Pecos starter Marty Martinik over the fence in left for his fifth home run of the season. He would hit number six in the bottom of the eighth to join the multi-home run game club. Wyatt's homer came in the bottom of the fifth; a three run blast that was followed one out later by Babe Herman's fifth jack of the year. Just and Wyatt each wound up with three ribs on the afternoon, and the word is that they treated the club to ribs and brewskies after the game. Martynik took the loss, going seven and giving up three earned runs on five hits while striking out two and walking two. Reliever Norm Branch went one and allowed three earned runs on two hits. Not a good day for the Pecos Pitching Personell.

A set of errors resulted in Monclova pulling out this one in ten, with most of the action occurring in the final three frames. Algona seemed to have a lock on this one, entering the bottom of the ninth with a 3-1 lead. Algona starter Ted Olson took the hill in the ninth and walked catcher Joe Becker, who had entered the game an inning earlier as part of a double switch. Joe Gantenbein reached on an infield single, putting runners at first and second. Ham Schulte slapped a hard grounder to first, where Harry Davis made an unbelievable grab, then won the race to first to retire Schulte, with the runners advancing. Olson's day was done, and Johnny Johnson was waved in to face lefties Milt Galatzer and Ed Coleman. With the infield playing back looking for an out, Galatzer grounded to short, scoring Becker, but holding Gantenbein at second. One out to go for the win...Then Ed Coleman singled to center and Gantenbein scampered home with th etying run. Mike Ryba had entered the game in the ninth and retired the side after allowing a single, and now pitched the tenth for Monclova, and all he did was set down Algona in order, using just eight pitches. Don French entered the game as the new Algona pitcher, and after getting Joe Greenberg on a comebacker, committed an error that put Nolen Richardson on first. Hank Nowak struck out, then Jim Tabor reached on an infield single to put runners on first and second with two out. Harry Bassin, inserted at first in the top of the tenth for Monclova, singled to right, but Richardson had to hold at third due to the arm of Lynn King in right. Bases full, and Ham Schulte ended things when his routine grounder to Sammy Bell at second was misplayed, allowing the winning run to score. Quite a game, to be sure. Greenberg led all hitters in this one with three hits. Six errors in all were committed in the game. Monclova reached .500, as they now sit at 14-14, one game behind Algona.

He made an error on an attempted steal, but that could have been chalked up to nerves. Little used reserve third baseman Merv Connors homered in the bottom of the ninth for Sonora, giving a spark of hope to the home town crowd, but nothing came of it, as starter Si Johnson retired the next three batters on flyouts. Johnson is now 4-0 on the season, after going the distance and allowing eight hits while striking out four and walking one. Kemp Wicker went nine for Sonora, and he gave up four runs, three of them earned. He allowed six hits, struck out four and walked two. Paducah is the first team to reach twenty wins.

Seneca couldn't hold on to a 9-1 lead, losing the game in horrific fashion, dropping their record to 4-24 on the season. The short version has Seneca starter Marvin Duke leaving the game after going eight and allowing four earned runs on seven hits and three walks. When he left, Seneca led 9-4. Seneca used two relievers in the bottom of the ninth, and neither of them could record an out. The horrible details follow...hope you have the stomach for this...Righty Norm Hibbs took the mound for Seneca with visions of closing this thing out and celebrating a rare win. Instead, leadoff batter Chuck Sheerin reached on an error, then went to third on a single up the middle by catcher Ben Huffman. Ed Remorenko came up and singled to the exact same place, putting Huffman on third. One run in. Leo Ogorek singled to right, scoring Huffman and advancing Remorenko to second. Bob Latshaw walked to load 'em up, and Hibbs workout was over with Seneca holding a 9-6 lead. Enter Horace Lisenbee. Throwing a sinker low and away to rightfielder George Stumpf resulted in Stumpf chopping down on the ball, which slowly dribbled to second baseman Al Glossop, who could not get to it in time. Stumpf had an infield single, Calico scored their third run of the inning, the bases were loaded, and there was still nobody out. Benny McCoy was sent up to pinch hit for reliever William Smith, and he socked the ball to right, scoring Ogorek to make it a one run game. Andy Pilney singled to center to score two and win the ballgame. That's the short version! The linescore for the Seneca gasoline brigade: no innings pitched, six runs allowed, five of them earned. six hits and one walk. Seneca falls to 4-24.

Henry Schluter drove in two in the bottom of the seventh to give Yucca a 3-1 lead. Catcher Chris Hartje had two hits to lead Yucca, including a double. Believe it or not, in this game George Puccinelli made news...not for hitting a home run, but for drawing a base on balls for the first time this season! Ted Williams slugged his twelfth homer of the season in the first, but it was Anthony Dueker's three run blast in the sixth that put the game away for Pecos in the opener of their three game set with Monclova. Williams enjoyed a three hit day, as did Pecos first sacker Jack Burns. Monclova scored their lone run when Joe Gantenbein tripled then scored on an infield hit. John Haley went the distance for the win, giving up one earned run on five hits. He struck out one and walked two. Joe Rogalski got the start and the loss for Monclova, getting pulled from the contest after five and a third and giving up five earned runs. He allowed eight hits and struck out three. Pecos improves to 16-13, while Monclova drops to 14-15.

HR- Pad: B.Rosar (4); Cal: O.Carnegie (12)
Buddy Rosar had a game to remember today, going five for five with a double and a homer, but it was Joe Mulligan who had the last laugh, as he went the distance to get the win in the opener of this three game series, and in the process move his club to within three of the front running Paducah squad. Rosar's homer led off the top of the sixth, and as things turned out, it was one of the strangest innings of the season. Mulligan walked the next batter, Johnny Tyler, and successive one base errors followed. First, Robert Porter reached on an error by Benny McCoy at second, then Al Smith reached on a miscue by Malin McCulloch in right, loading the bases with no out and Paducah down by a run. The infield played in and got pitcher Ken Raffensberger to hit into a 6-2 fielder's choice. Playing in on Pee Wee Reese, Calico got another break when Reese hit a sharp grounder to Jim Oglesby at first, who fired to catcher Ed Madjeski for the innings' second out at the plate. Merrill May then fouled out to first to end the inning. Paducah would get another chance in the ninth after Rosar hit a one out double and moved to third on a grounder to short. The right handed throwing Mulligan bore down to strike out lefty Robert Porter to nail down the win. Raffensberger lost for the first time this year, leaving after going seven and allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking one. Mulligan gave up ten hits, struck out five and walked five for the sloppy, yet exciting win.
C29 Algona (C.Fischer, 3-1) @ Sonora (E.Nelson, 2-4)

Sonora 102 034 00x - 10 12 0
W- E.Nelson (3-4), Sv- E.Riddle (1), L- C.Fischer (3-2)
Both clubs duked it out for the first three innings. There was a rain delay in the fifth that lasted two hours, and when it was over, Sonora came out swingin', while Algona seemed to have left their bats in the clubhouse. Down 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth, Sonora roughed up the scoreboard with three runs in the fifth to take the lead, and four more in the sixth to show who's the boss. Sonora starter Emmitt Nelson went six and allowed five earned runs on ten hits, striking out two and walking one. Elmer Riddle went the rest of the way to get the three inning save, tossing shutout ball on one hit, one strikeout and two walks. Lynn King and Ed Longacre each had three hits for Algona. Stan Spence went berserk at the plate, collecting three hits including a double and driving in four. Fern Bell in each of his first four plate appearances. Carl Fischer took the loss for Algona, allowing five earned runs in five innings on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

W- N.Kleinke (4-1), L- H.Kelleher (1-5)
HR- Yuc: B.Herman (6)
Babe Herman socked his sixth homer of the season, and swiped his first bag of the year, while Norbert Kleinke scattered six hits in going the distance to lead Yucca to a win over the hapless Seneca ball club. Herman's home run broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth. Yucca shortstop Chester Wilburn had three hits on the afternoon, all singles. Kleinke allowed one unearned run, struck out three and walked one. Hal Kelleher went seven and a third in taking the loss for Seneca. He did well up to that point, giving up the tater after walking Ollie Bejma. He retired Joe Just on a flyout to right, then gave up a double to Joe Martin, and that ended Kleinke's workout. He gave up three earned runs on nine hits, while striking out two and walking three.
A30 Pecos (E.Cook, 1-3) @ Monclova (M.Ryba, 3-0)

Monclova 300 203 01x - 9 14 0
W- M.Ryba (4-0), L- E.Cook (1-4)
Monclova jumps out to a fast 3-0 lead, and doesn't look back, as they bounce back after losing the opener to rough up the visitors and come to within a game of them. Milt Galatzer's double capped off a three run Monclova first off Pecos starter Ed Cook, who came into the ballgame looking to improve on his 1-3 record. Unfortunately for Cook, he wound up leaving after five and a third, having given up seven runs, five of them earned. Galatzer's double was one of three hits he had on the afternoon; a feat he shared with teammates Eddie Coleman and Joe Mack. Mike Ryba got the spot start and went all the way for the win, allowing three earned runs on six hits, striking out eight and walking three. George Washburn had mop up duty for Pecos, and he did well, tossing two and two thirds innings, giving up two unearned runs.

Paducah 304 000 001 - 8 11 2
Calico 000 000 010 - 1 4 1
W- J.Mooty (1-3), L- J.Gee (4-3)
Paducah scores seven big ones in the first three innings, as they easily make mincemeat out of their hosts to pick up their twenty-first win of the year against only nine losses. Jake Mooty had no trouble racking up the outs as he got the start for Paducah, allowing one unearned run over eight innings. He gave up just four hits, struck out three and walked five. Johnny Tyler had three hits and scored three runs, while Buddy Rosar had a pair of doubles and three runs driven in. Johnny Gee went home disappointed that he didn't pick up his fifth win, instead leaving the game after going six and allowing seven runs, four of them earned. He gave up eight hits, struck out three and walked four.
C30 Algona (D.French, 1-1) @ Sonora (J.Hubbell, 0-1)

Sonora 335 001 00x - 12 18 1

Algona scored four runs in the top of the first, and the effect was getting the Sonora club angry, as they responded with eleven tallies in the first three innings, and take game two of their three game series in convincing fashion. Sonora second baseman Mickey Haslin went five for six and scored four runs to win himself a suit and a free lunch at the Silky Stove diner, located on the outskirts of town. Ed Longacre had a three hit day for Algona, and reached on an error to give Algona fans something to cheer about. John Hubbellwent eight in getting the win, allowing five runs, two of them earned. He gave up eleven hits, struck out two and walked one. Don French took the hill for Algona and allowed eleven runs, six of them earned over five innings. He got roughed up for fifteen hits, struck out one and walked three. Art Parks contributed three singles and two RBI to the win.

Al Glossop had three hits for Seneca, including two doubles, driving in three runs on the day. Charlie Keller went two for four. Joe Beggs picked up the win after going eight and wllowing three earned runs. Frank Makosky pitched two scoreless innings to get the save. Seneca held tough to win it, seeing their early 1-0 lead get wiped out by a two run homer by Joe Just. Babe Herman drove in Joe Martin in the third to make it 3-1. Both teams put up a run in the fourth to make it 4-2, Yucca. After that, it was all Seneca. Yank Terry took the loss, going nine and allowing four earned runs on ten hits. He struck out four and walked one, and saw his record drop to 4-2. The loss dropped Yucca to 19-11.

HR- Pec: T.Williams (13)
Monclova overcomes a Pecos rally in the late innings to get the win and put both teams in a tie with 16-15 records. Monclova starter Bob Bowman went seven and two-thirds innings, leading 4-0 after six before tiring in the seventh and almost giving back the lead after Pecos first baseman Jack Burns led off the inning with a triple to Ed Coleman in right, who funbled with the ball as he tried to field it, allowing the fleet footed Burns to score. Two walks and two singles later, Pecos had another run, and the lead was cut in half. Ted Williams socked a two out homer in the eighth, and was followed by a double by George Puccinelli, effectively ending Bowman's day. Mike Ryba took the hill in relief and after walking Earl Bolyard, he retired Eddie Phillips on a flyout to right. Pinch hitter Cooper Hampton reached on a two out error in the top of the ninth, but Ryba settled down and retired Oscar Grimes to end the game. Nate Andrews started for Pecos, and quickly gave up a pair of runs in the first, followed by two more in the sixth. He was pulled after that and ended up allowing six hits while striking out four and walking five. Bowman went seven and two thirds, allowing three earned runs on six hits. He struck out six and walked two.
B31 Paducah (R.Grabowski, 3-1) @ Calico (E.Chapman, 3-2)

Calico starter Ed Chapman took a no-hitter to the eighth, and with one out the no-no was spoiled by a single off the bat of backup second sacker Jimmie Adair. The no-hitter was almost lost an inning earlier. Johnny Tyler led off the seventh by reaching on a two base error. Buddy Rosar grounded to third, followed by a whiff by fellow slugger Phil Weintraub. Little used outfielder Tom Oliver came up and knocked a fly ball to deep right field. George Stumpf kept a bead on it, but had to dive on the warning track near the foul pole and using the backhand of his glove, made a spectacular catch to keep the no-hitter intact. In the top of the ninth, Johnny Tyler drilled a single up the middle, erasing the one-hitter and putting the tying run at the plate in the form of Buddy Rosar, who has four homers on the year, and was looking for a good pitch to hit number five. However Rosar hit a sharp grounder to the right of shortstop Bobby Mattick whose only play was at second for the force. Weintraub swung at the first pitch he saw, and lifted a harmless fly ball to first in foul territory for the second out. Oliver grounded to short to end the game. Chapman wtruck out seven, and improved his record to 4-2. Paducah starter Reggie Grabowski took the loss to fall to 3-2. He went seven and allowed two earned runs on six hits while striking out five. Calico third baseman John King had two singles and an RBI to lead the offense.

Sonora takes this one in the shorts, as skipper Harry "Snapper" Organs makes the decision to leave youngster Joe Gonzales in for a five inning start, and the result wasn't pretty, with Algona improving to 16-15 on the year. Lynn King and backup shortstop Tony Malinosky each had five hits for the winners, while Harry Davis came in for four hits and two RBI. In all, Algona racked up twenty hits, fifteen of them off of Gonzales, who allowed six runs, four of them earned. He struck out one and walked one. Algona starter Al Piechota went the distance, allowing one earned run on just four hits. He struck out two and walked three in picking up his league leading sixth win. Fern Bell's third inning solo shot was about all the offense Sonora could muster. Bell singled and walked twice.

Babe Herman's three run tater in the first turned out to be all Yucca would need, as they defeat Seneca and take the series behind a complete game performance out of George Hader. Yucca scored three more in the eighth to cement the victory, aided by singles from Chester Wilburn and Vince Sherlock, followed in quick succession by doubles from Johnny Hopp and Herman. Hader picked up his first win of the year, allowing one earned run on eleven hits while striking out two and walking four. Billy Urbansky walked, doubled and cracked his first circuit shot of the year to spol Hader's shutout bid. Bob Logan took the loss, going seven and a third and allowing seven runs, six of them earned. He struck out five and walked one. With the win, Yucca finds themselves one game out of first behind Paducah, with these two teams squaring off for a three game series in Paducah on Nickel Hot Dog Week.
