Algona scores four big ones in the second, taking the opener of the Badlands Baseball Circuit by five over a tough Calico nine. Algona picked up a run in the first on a pair of singles, and a pair of errors, before tagging Calico starter Johnny Gee for five singles and a walk in the second to bump up their lead to 5-0. Calico picked up a couple of runs in the sixth and ninth on solo home runs by George Stumpf and Chuck Sheerin, but by then Algona had run away with it. Al Piechota went six and allowed three earned runs to pick up the win.

In a wild game that saw a combined twenty one runs on nineteen hits and five errors, the boys from Pecos managed to rally for eight runs to take an 11-7 lead, then hold on for dear life to edge Seneca in the season opener for both clubs. Seneca struck first with a four run first that was topped by a triple by second sacker Al Glossop. Pecos centerfielder George Puccinelli slugged a three run jack in the third to make it a one run game, but Les Scarsella's two run homer in the bottom of the third, along with Charlie Gelbert's solo shot an inning later put Seneca ahead 7-3 after four. Pecos exploded for four runs in the fifth and repeated the feat in the seventh to go up by three. By then starter John Haley was long gone. Scarsella singled in Gelbert for his fifth RBI of the game in the seventh. George Washburn was on the hill for Pecos in the ninth after pitching the seventh and eighth, and was looking to preserve a three run lead. A leadoff error and three walks and two strikeouts later, he was sent to the showers as his third walk resulted in a run. Joseph Shaffer came in and walked in another run before getting catcher Johnny Pasek on a grounder to end the game. Oad Swigart took the loss. William Homan and Puccinelli each drove in three runs for Pecos.
D1 Sonora (H.Smythe, 0-0) @ Yucca (W.Wyatt, 0-0)

Ten men came to the plate in the seventh for Yucca, and six of them scored, turning a close 3-0 game into a laugher, as Sonora gets beat like a drum to close out opening day in the BBC. Yucca starter Whitlow Wyatt went the distance to pick up the shutout victory, allowing six hits and striking out four. Sonora starter Harry Smythe allowed six earned runs over six innings. He gave up nine hits, struck out five and walked one. Joe Martin's three run shot in the bottom of the seventh ended the afternoon for Smythe.

Calico took advantage of a one out error in the first to make it a big four run inning, and they addd three more to take the ballgame and even their series with Algona. Calico starter Ed Chapman went seven and allowed three earned runs on six hits to pick up the win despite walking seven. Algona starter Jack Berly ended up going five and allowing five runs, four of them earned. He struck out four and walked four. W- M.Ryba (1-0), Sv- D.Midkiff (1), L- D.Boone (0-1)
The first BBC game this season to go extras is won by Monclova, as they get help from an RBI double by pinch hitter Milt Galatzer, and an RBI grounder by Tabor to pick up two runs in the twelfth, and they would need that extra run, as Paducah got one of them back and had a runner on third with two out before Al Smith grounded out to end the game. Monclova starter Art Herring was cruising with a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the ninth, when he saw his complete game shutout disappear after giving up a one out walk to Smith, followed by a game tying double by pinch hitter George Washington. Yes, THAT George Washington...It was only the second hit given up by Herring on the day; he was this close to tossing a one-hit shutout. Reliever Mike Ryba tossed two shutout innings, with the save going to Dick Midkiff. Daniel Boone, yes, THAT Daniel Boone, took the loss.
C2 Pecos (E.Cook, 0-0) @ Seneca (M.Duke, 0-0)

Pecos scores four over the first three innings, then add three more in the final frames to whip Seneca and improve their record to 2-0 in this young season. Pecos secondbaseman and leadoff batter Anthony Duecker homered on the first pitch he saw from Seneca starter Marvin Duke to give the visitors from Texas a fast 1-0 lead. Two outs later, Ted Williams singled, and was doubled in by Bill Homan, and it was 2-0. Puccinelli doubled in Duecker in the second, and Teddy Ballgame tripled and scored in the third to make it 4-0 Pecos. Meanwhile, Seneca could not do anything against Pecos starter Earl Cook, who ended up getting the win after going eight and allowing one earned run on five hits while striking out two and walking three. Duke took the loss, leaving the game after going seven and allowing four earned runs on ten hits while striking out two and walking two. Overlooked in the contest was the solo home run by Seneca's Les Scarsella, his second in as many games.

Paducah overcomes having their starting pitcher ejected, as they put together a couple of good innings to come away with a game three victory against a tough Monclova nine. Reggie Grabowski took a 2-1 lead into the top of the fifth for Paducah when he hit Chet Morgan with two out and no one on. As it happened, he had hit Monclova's Milt Galatzer in the top of the third with two out and a runner on. In the bottom of the third, Monclova starter Red Lynn plunked Paducah catcher Buddy Rosar with two out and a runner on second. Umpire "Little" John Lasorda warned both benches, and so when Morgan was hit, Grabowski was tossed. Paducah reliever Linville Watkins pitched the remainder of the game to earn the win. He pitched four and a third scoreless innings, allowing four hits while striking out three and walking two. Lynn went six in getting the loss. He gave up five earned runs on seven hits. He struck out one and walked two.

Seneca starter Hal Kelleher was roughed up for eight earned runs over three and a third. He gave up twelve hits, struck out two and walked one. Releivers Bob Logan and Norm Hibbs each allowed five hits, with Logan getting hit for three earned runs, while Hibbs gave up four earned runs. Nate andrews went seven for Pecos to get the win. After getting shut out in their first two games of the season, Sonora manages to put up a deuce in the sixth, but end up on the losing end once again, as they drop to 0-3 on the year. However, the loss did not come without a moment of glory. Yucca collected three straight singles to load 'em up in the bottom of the eighth. Alex Hooks took four wide ones to score Joe Martin from third with what would be the winning run. Right fielder Paul Dunlap came up and hit a little foul pop-up to the right of home plate. Sonora catcher Joe Schultz moved like lightning to stab it, then fired to third to catch Ollie Bejma napping off the bag. Third baseman Buck Fausett threw a dart to Justin Stein at second to nab Joe Just, and "Just" like that, Sonora had turned a triple play! "We had the ol' rufus-goofus on that play, let me tell you!" said an excited Schultz after. Norbert Kleinke went the distance to pick up the win, allowing two earned runs on seven hits. He struck out three and walked two. Emmit Nelson took the loss, going seven and allowing three earned runs on ten hits while striking out one and walking two.

W- I.Chelini (1-0), L- C.Fischer (0-1)
Italo Chelini tosses a five hit shutout, while overcoming a very good pitching performance by visiting starter Carl Fischer, as Calico wraps up their first series by taking three from Algona. Tony Malinosky was the only Algona batter who had Chelini's number, doubling twice against the lefty. Chelini struck out two and walked one in the contest. Fischer went eight and gave up two earned runs on seven hits while walking three and whiffing three. Calico leadoff batter Benny McCoy had two hits, both singles, to lead his team.

Monclova's Joe Rogalski throws the second shutout of day four in the BBC, while his club puts up runs in the late innings, giving Monclova the win and a split in the series. Marty Marion's two out triple opened the scoring, driving in first baseman Joe Mack. Not to be outdone, Chet Morgan tripled with two out in the seventh to score Rogalski. Catcher El Breese drove in two runs with a double to the gap in center in the eighth to close out the scoring in this one. Joe Heving went seven in taking the loss. He allowed two runs on six hits, struck out three and walked three. In all, five guys named "Joe" played in this game...

Seneca took out the frustration of being 0-3 on Pecos starter Michael Martynik and the rest of the Pecos club, whipping the visitors for their first win of the year. Edwin Taylor homered twice, both solo shots, and he scored three times. Eddie Morgan also scored three times while walking twice and reaching on a single. Morgan scored a run in each of the first three innings. Ted Williams socked his third home run of the season, a three run shot in the eighth that prevented a shutout and chased Seneca starter Joe Beggs. Martynik went two and allowed nine runs, six of them earned. He gave up seven hits and seven walks while striking out one. Reliever Norm Branch went four good innings, allowing one earned run on one hit while striking out three and walking none. Beggs picked up the win going seven and giving up three runs, two of them earned. He allowed eight hits and had one strikeout and one walk. He gave way to Oad Swigart, who wrapped things up with two scoreless, hitless innings.

HR- Pad: B.Rosar (1)
Ken Raffensberger gave up one earned run over eight innings, while Buddy Rosar provided the clout, as Paducah takes the opener of a four game series with Algona. Raffensberger went into cruise control in the first three innings before giving up Algona's first hit in the fourth. He gave up his lone run in the fifth on a walk and a pair of singles, then settled down before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the eighth with a 4-1 lead. Linville Watkins picked up the save, though he put runners at the corners in the bottom of the ninth with one out, before retiring catcher Walt Ringhofer on a foul out to first, and closing out the ball game by inducing a fly ball to right by Jack Sanford, pinch hitting for Algona reliever Pat Malone. Raffensberger gave up six hits, struck out three and walked two. Algona starter Jack LaRocca took the loss going seven and allowing four runs, one of them earned. He gave up four hits, struck out three and walked three.

Yucca improves to 5-0 on the year, despite collecting only three hits off Monclova starter Bob Bowman. The only problem for Bowman was that one of those hits was a two run shot in the eighth by Babe Herman that sailed over the centerfield wall and landed in a sandy wash filled with tumbleweeds. Monclova got their run in the bottom half of that frame on a triple by catcher Joe Becker, one of four hits he collected on the afternoon to win a free long sleeve dress shirt. Yucca starter Whitlow Wyatt went the distance to pick up his second win of the year, allowing nine hits while striking out eight and walking two. Bowman pitched an amazing game, going the distance as well and getting the hard luck loss. He allowed to earned runs on three hits while striking out three and walking one. Well, someone had to lose this one, right?

John Haley went eight in getting the win, giving up three earned runs on eight hits while striking out six and walking six. Howie Krist gave up four earned runs on eleven hits in his seven inning start as he took the loss. He struck out two and walked three. Seneca gets beat up again, taking it in the shorts to the tune of ten runs in the hot Sonora sun to the until now worst team in the league. Fern Bell's solo home run capped a seven run Sonora sixth. Seneca starter Oscar Judd had allowed one run over the first five innings before opening up the bottom of the sixth by walking the first two batters he faced. Things got worse after he got Sonora's Mickey Haslin on a pop up, as he walked Tommy Irwin to load 'em up. Joe Schultz singled to left to drive in two. Ed Moore popped up for the second out, then the bridge collapsed on Judd. Third sacker Charlie "Chalo" Gelbert flubbed a routine grounder. Buck Fausett tripled to right, where Eddie Morgan chased it down, then accidentally kicked it like Ronaldo allowing Fausett to score easily. Bell homered, and Judd's day was over. Because of the errors, Judd ended up with three earned runs in five and two thirds. He walked seven, making his bad day even worse. Harry Smythe went seven in getting the win. He allowed one unearned run on six hits while striking out three and walking two. Chet Morgan singled three times in his last three at bats for Seneca.

Mickey Heath's fourth inning grand slam provided just enough runs to give Algona their second win of the year. Lynn King contributed three singles and scored twice for Algona. Coaker Triplett chalked up his first homer of the year for Algona, and is fast becoming a fan favorite. Al Piechota improved to 2-0 on the year, tossing seven innings and allowing four runs, two of them earned. He gave up eight hits, struck out one and walked one. Jake Mooty took the loss, going five and allowing ten runs. Thankfully, for him, only four of them were earned. He gave up eleven hits, struck out three and walked one.

Monclova 100 000 00x - 1 2 0
W- A.Herring (1-0), L- R.Barrett (1-1)
Red Barrett pitched a great game, allowing two singles, only one of which got out of the infield, but a first inning wild pitch ultimately did him in, as Monclova gets a very good performance out of Art Herring to end Yucca's unbeaten streak at five games. Herring scattered six hits, struck out six and walked one, as Barrett took what has to be the hard luck loss of the year. Monclova got their two hits in the early going. Ham Schulte took a one out walk and an out later reached third on a single by Moncloava first baseman Harry Bassin. Barrett's second pitch to Chet Morgan was in the dirt wide to the left of catcher Joe Just, and this allowed Schulte to score. Monclova catcher Joe Becker hit a two out single in the second, and that was all the offense the home team could muster all day. Monclova improved their record to 3-3 with the win.

Calico gets a route-going performance by Johnny Gee, and he comes through, fighting off a late inning rally to pick up the win and improve his record to 1-1. He gave up three earned runs on nine hits, struck out three and walking one. Ollie Carnegie parked a two run shot in the first to give his club an early lead. Though Pecos picked up a run in their half of the inning, Calico increased their lead to 3-1 in the third on Jim Oglesby's RBI double. Ted Williams tripled in the sixth for Pecos, scoring an out later on a single by Willie Homan. Calico put runners at the corners with one out in the top of the eighth, and they got the run on a grounder by reserve outfielder Edward Remorenko to give them a 4-2 lead. By now, Pecos starter Earl Cook was gone, having gone seven and allowing three earned runs on five hits. He struck out four and walked four. Pecos threatened again in the bottom of the eighth, when Williams walked, Puccinelli singled, then Homan singled to center to score Teddy Ballgame and put runners at the corners with one out. Gee got catcher Eddie Phillips to sky to right, but it was not deep enough for Pooch to try to tag up. Rightfielder Al Marchand bounced back to the box to end the inning, and that's as close as Pecos got.

Seneca starter "Marvelous" Marvin Duke went seven and allowed on earned run on just three hits with one strikeout. Sonora starter Kemp Wicker was roughed up for five earned runs on seven hits in two and a third. Reliever Joe Gonzales picked up the pieces from there and pitched four and two thirds, allowing two earned runs on four hits and three K's. Berly scattered nine hits in the contest, with Wally Judnich the only Paducah batter to reach third. Berly struck out three and walked five, and still managed to hurl a shutout. Reggie Grabowski took the loss for Paducah, allowing two earned runs on six hits over eight innings. He struck out six and walked two. Algona skipper Eric "The Artful" Dajur made a gutsy call in the ninth, with Pee Wee Reese on second and two out and slugging catcher Buddy Rosar up. Rosar had reached base in each of his previous four at bats, and could tie the game with one swing. The "Pooch" hit his homers in back to back innings. Nate Andrews cruised along with a 5-0 shutout entering the ninth before Malin McCulloch singled to open the frame, followed by Ollie Carnegie's homer to left which effectively ended the day for the Pecos starter. Andrews gave up five hits, struck out four and walked three. George Washburn gave up a one out walk to John King, but otherwise shut down Calico to pick up his second save of the season. Ed Chapman took the loss, pitching seven and allowing four earned runs on six hits while striking out six and walking one.

Sonora batters hit for the cycle in the first to take a 5-0 lead, but Seneca fought back to tie the game in the fifth, only to have Stan Spence knock a two run homer in the bottom of the fifth to lift Sonora up to a big win which puts both these teams in a tie with a record of 2-5 on the year. Spence hit nothing but doubles in his first, second, and fourth at-bats, finishing the game with three RBI and winning a brand new long sleeve shirt, courtesy of Sonora Suits and Stuff. If he would have gone 5 for 5, he would have one an entire suit, including a belt and tie. Oh well...Charlie Keller had three hits for Seneca, all singles. Emmitt Nelson got the win for Sonora, goind six and allowing four earned runs on nine hits. John Hubbell pitched an inning to get the save. Hal Kelleher went five and got pretty roughed up in taking the loss. He allowed seven earned runs on nine hits while striking out two. Seneca's Horace Lisenbee and Sonora's Ted Wilks each tossed two innings of scoreless relief.

Algona third baseman Joe Benning had four hits on the afternoon including a double, while his buddy Ed Longacre tripled and singled, driving in two on the day. Algona starter Ted Olson went seven to pick up the win and even his record at 1-1, allowing eleven hits along the way. Pecos took a 7-0 lead into the ninth, and nearly lost it after starter Michael Martynik gave up a walk and four singles before being lifted for a reliever, but he ends up with the win anyway in an exciting game under the hot Pecos sun. A couple of errors contributed to the two runs scored by the home team in the second, and Pecos was doing a good job holding off Calico with a 2-0 lead through the top of the seventh. Things went sour for Calico starter Albert Fisher in the bottom of the seventh when he gave up back to back jacks to Ted Williams and George Puccinelli. Bernard Cobb put one over the center field wall in the bottom of the eighth against Calico reliever Willie Smith to give Pecos their 7-0 lead. Martynik gave up three earned runs on eight hits while striking out seven and walking four. In a battle of the Bobs, Bob Bowman picked up his first win, while Bob Kline picked up his first loss as Monclova shuts out Calico in the opener of their four game series. Kline got into trouble early, giving up a leadoff triple to Milt Galatzer who scored an out later on Chet Morgan's infield hit. In the second, Bob Bowman bunted to advance a pair of runners, and his dribbler was scooped up by Calico first sacker Jim Oglesby who threw the ball way over Leo Ogorek covering the bag from second. Monclova took advantage of this miscue to plate two more runs. Bowman was stingy on the mound, scattering three doubles and three singles, and not allowing a runner to third. He gave up six hits, struck out five and walked three. Kline settled down after the first two innings, and left after going six and allowing four runs, one of them earned. Walkup was replaced by reliever Phil Page, who ran into further bad luck in the fifth after giving up two more runs, and rightfielder Lynn King put the icing on the cake by hitting the first pitch he saw from Yucca's third pitcher of the day in the bottom of the sixth, giving Algona a huge victory over the first place Yuccas. Carl Fischer went eight to get the win and even his record at 1-1. Along with his homer, King had a sac fly and two singles to lead his club. Paducah starter Julio Bonetti looked a little rough around the edges, allowing four runs, three of them earned, while giving up nine hits, striking out three and walking four. May ended up with four ribs on the day with a triple and two singles. Johnny Tyler, "Madcap," also had three hits, all singles. Reliever Bob Carpenter pitched the eighth and got his first two batters out before giving up two singles, but he recovered and retired pinch hitter Cecil Dunn on a cutter down the middle. In the bottom of the ninth, He struck out Ed Coleman to start the inning, then seemingly forgot how to pitch as he gave up a single, a triple then hit Marty Marion. Joe Gantenbein reached second on an eror by first sacker Jim Oglesby and this chased Carpenter. Joe Mulligan took the mound and got Joe Becker to ground to second, moving Gantenbein to third. Hank Nowak singled to score Gantenbein, then Ham Schulte singled, and the crowd got excited, while Calico players were wodnering if they would ever get out of the inning. Dunn came up with runners in scoring position, and Mulligan got him to swing on an inside fastball and lift a can of corn fly to left to end the ball game. Schulte had four hits for Monclova, one of them a double. Coleman had three hits including a triple. For Calico, Oglesby, Malin McCulloch and Chuck Sheerin each had three hits. Shortstop Lloyd Russell had a four hit day with two doubles. Puccinelli and Earl Bolyard had three hits apiece. Sonora used four pitchers in the game and each one of them took a licking. Starter Pat McLaughlin went four and gave up four earned runs on eight hits, struck out one and walked five. Bright spots to write about were three innings of shutout relief by Oad Swigart and Marvin Duke to close out this nightmare game for Seneca. On offense, they got a three hit game from first baseman Les Scarsella, all singles. Meanwhile, Monclova had three batters with three hits. Algona was cruising along, taking a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh thanks to some good pitching to that point by Ted Olson who had been stingy with giving up base hits, scattering three singles in the first six innings. Things unraveled for Olson in the bottom of the seventh, as he gave up double-single-double-single-double with one strikeout mixed in, and before you knew it the game was tied, and hot dogs and sodas were being bought and consumed along with a lot of beer as the fans got into the game. Olson went nine, as did Pecos starter John Haley, who ended up allowing two earned runs on eight hits while striking out seven and walking one. Horace Lisenbee became the third pitcher on this hot afternoon for Seneca, and he pitched a shaky, but scoreless eighth, giving up a two out double and a walk before getting Chet Morgan on a flyout to right. Lisenbee cracked after that, allowing five singles and a walk to the first six batters he faced in the top of the ninth. The first single of the inning was hit by Joe Gantenbein, who got thrown out at single as he tried to stretch his out to a double. Oad Swigart allowed a base hit, but otherwise retired Monclova to end the top half of the ninth. Seneca got a run off of Monclova reliever Ralph Winegarner, who had just entered the game. Before he could finish things off, he had fiven up three singles to score Charlie Keller. Monclova improves to 7-7, while Seneca falls to 2-12.

Algon loses in heartbreak fashion, as Pecos delights their fans by scoring four runs in the bottom of the ninth, capped off by a game winning home run by Eddie Phillips. Down 4-2 in the top of the eighth, Algona put up a five-spot, thanks in large part to a grand slam by Mickey Heath. Amazingly, Heath has two home runs on the season, and both of them have been slams. Algon now led 7-4. Johnny Johnson had come in to relieve starter Carl Fischer in the seventh, and was now in his third inning with a three run lead and feeling good after striking out the side in the eighth. He opened the bottom of the ninth by giving up an infield single to William Homan. Bernard Cobb grounded to third, but Homan was on the run and reached second on the out. Ted Williams came up with two home runs already smashed in the contest, and drew the "unintentional" intentional walk, as Johnson was pitching very carefuly to the big left hander. Feared hitter George Puccinelli popped up to second, and Johnson was nearly out of it with a save. But Earl Bolyard doubled to center to score both runs, and Algona's lead was now a skinny run. The decision was made to leave Johnson in to pitch to Eddie Phillips, and as we know now, that was a big mistake. Pecos improves to 10-4, moving into first ahead of Yucca.

Soft spoken first baseman Gene Hasson socks his first two home runs of the year, leading Paducah to a big win to deny Yucca a share of first place with Pecos. Paducah scored three times in the first, courtesy of the first of two doubles that would be hit on this scorching afternoon by backup outfielder George Washington. Yucca went down quietly in their half of the first, but managed to retake the lead with five runs coming in over the next three innings. In the fifth, Hasson hit his first homer of the year, a three run shot to center that capped Paducah's four run inning. Paducah would add three more runs the rest of the way to get the win. Reggie Grabowsky picked up the ugly win with seven innings of eleven hit ball. He gave up six earned runs, struck out one and walked three, and evened his season record at 1-1. Linville pitched two shutout innings to close the thing out, getting the benefit of a twin-killing in the ninth to make things a little easier for him. Yank Terry went five and got roughed up for seven earned runs on nine hits. He struck out two and walked three. Joe Just homered, doubled and drove in four in front of the home crowd.

Back to back home runs in the fourth score three runs and enable Calico to take the lead they never relinquished, as they overcome a fourteen hit day from Sonora to get the win and improve their season record to 8-6. Ollie Carnegie creamed a Kemp Wicker curveball that didn't curve very much, over the centerfield wall, scoring Jim Oglesby with one out, and was followed by a circuit shot by big George Stumpf, and Sonora saw their lead vanish. Wicker ended up lasting five innings, in which he allowed five earned runs on seven hits. He struck out one and walked two. Elmer Riddle impressed with three innings of scoreless relief for Sonora, in which he gave up one hit and struck out two. Italo Chelini went eight and two thirds to pick up his second win of the year. He allowed two earned runs on a whopping fourteen hits, getting into and out of jams throughout the game. He struck out two and walked one, leaving the bases loaded in the top of the ninth. Howie Krist pitched to one batter, Les Powers, and got him to pop to first, but this was enough to pick up his first save of the season.

Seneca gets four runs in the third, and another in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead, but had to hold off a fierce Monclova rally over the final three frames to drop the snide and rack up their third win of the season in a nail-biter of a game. Seneca's big four run inning came at the expense of two Monclova errors, coupled with two hits and three walks and a fielder's choice thrown in for good measure. Three singles resulted in one run in the top of the seventh for Monclova to make the score 6-2 in favor of Seneca, and two more Monclova runs in the top of the eighth made it a 6-4 game. By now, Seneca starter Hal Kelleher was gone, and reliever Frank Makosky had stopped Monclova in the eighth by retiring Jim Tabor, Chet Morgan and Joe Becker, all .300 hitters, to keep it a two run game. In the ninth, Makosky gave up a double to Joe Mack, then got Ham Schulte to ground to short, holding Mack at second. Harry Bassin came in to pinch it for Marty Marion, and he singled to left, moving Mack to third. Hank Nowak hit a pinch single to center to score Mack, and the lead was one with two on and just one out. Leadoff batter Milt Galatzer was up, and he had doubled in the previous inning. Makosky used just the right combination of pitches, and Galatzer hit into a game ending double play. Hey Seneca- Nicely done!

Algona loses a 3-1 lead in the fifth, then lose the game in the eleventh, as Pecos solidifies their lead in the standings in a terrific game on their home turf. Algona's heart was first broken in the fifth when "The Pooch" socked his eleventh home run of the year, an incredible feat considering this is only the fifteenth game of the season. Algona starter Jack LaRocca ended up pitching a pretty good game, going eight and allowing three earned runs on nine hits while striking out five and walking three. However, Pecos starter Nate Andrews was tough on the hill, also going eight while allowing three runs, two of them earned. He gave up nine hits, struck out two and walked two. Pecos won the game when Bernard Cobb singled off reliever Johnny Johnson, and moved to third on a double by Will Homan. Jack Burns drew a walk to load 'em up. With the infield in, Ted Williams hit it back to the box, and Johnson threw home to get Cobb at the plate. Then, in the worst way to lose a game imaginable, Johnson got into a stretch, into a set position then moved his elbow in a jerky motion and was called for a balk. Homan came in and the joint was jumpin'! Teddy Ballgame had three hits on the afternoon, including a double. For Algona reliever Johnny Johnson, it was his third straight loss in relief. Welcome to the minors, young man!

Wally Judnich hit for the cycle, with an additional triple, driving in five, and paducah would eventually need all of those runs, as they overcome a Yucca six run fourth to eek out a win to tie both clubs in the standings. The game was tied at 3-3 going into the bottom of the fourth, when with nobody on and two out, George Archie homered to center. A walk and a single later, Babe Herman launched his third homer of the year. Two singles, a walk and an error later, Yucca had scored two more runs to take the lead 9-3. Paducah did not play dead after this. In fact they scored three in the fifth, two in the sixth, one in the seventh, and one more in the eighth...talk about a RUN!

Benny McCoy crushed a hard fastball by Sonora starter Emmitt Nelson in the second, sending it over the centerfield fence with the bases juiced, and this slam along with a strong shutout performance by ace Johnny Gee, put Calico solidly in second with Paducah with a record of 9-6, two behind Pecos. Calico's four run second was followed quickly by a three run third, thanks to a Stan Spence error on a ball hit to right, and a two run home run by catcher Ed Madjeski, his first of the year. Rightfielder Malin McCulloch had three hits for Calico, all singles. Buckk Fausett had the same type of game at the plate for Sonora. Gee allowed ten hits, struck out two and walked three. Sonora was more than frustrated by leaving fourteen men on base. Four times they left a runner stranded on third. Nelson was lifted after going four, with seven earned runs charged against him. He allowed ten hits. Sonora did get some solid relief pitching out of the bullpen today, getting shutout innings from Harry Smythe, Al Benton and Ted Wilks. Sonora drops to 6-9 with the loss.

Seneca's joy over picking up their first win in ages gets wiped away as Monclova puts some hurt on the club by walloping them in the finale of the series. Joe Gantenbein scored four times in the game for Monclova. He had three hits including a double and reached on a fielder's choice. Ed Coleman also had a three hit day which included a ninth inning two run homer that added a good chunk of salt to Seneca's wound. Chet Morgan had a four hit game for Monclova, all singles, while catcher El Breese also had four hits, all singles, and he also reached on a walk and drove in three runs. "I'm exhausted," said the backup catcher after. Monclova starter Art Herring experienced his share of challenges from the start, putting runners on base in the first and second, giving up one run before leaving one runner stranded in the third, but by this time he had already given up six hits. He began the fourth by giving up a tater to Al Glossop, which was followed by a single and a walk before he settled down to retire the side in order. He gave up an unearned run in the fifth on a passed ball, and stranded a runner on second in the seventh, so his day was not exactly a picnic, but he did get the win. Thanks to his defense making errors behind him, Herring allowed three runs, two of them earned, on ten hits while striking out three and walking two. Oad Swigart managed to go six, but allowed nine earned runs on twelve hits. He struck out three, but had control problems, giving up seven walks. Monclova improves to 8-8, while Seneca falls to 3-13. Gonna be a long, hot, dry season for Seneca...

Algona catcher Hank Camelli drove in five runs today to single handedly rough up Pecos and ruin the day for the home town fans on "Ten Cent Everything" day at the ballpark, a very, very bad idea concocted by Pecos GM Juanito Von Der Ahe. Camelli hit a bases clearing double in the sixth to give Algona a 5-3 lead. His two run triple in the top of the ninth put the game on ice. Outfielders Ed Longacre and Coaker Triplett each had three hits in the game. "Pooch" hit another one out, this twelfth, and everyone is wondering if this guy is ever going to cool off, or will he have twenty jacks by the time the team has played thirty games...and if he does, will he be called up to the bigs!!?? Al Piechota went the distance to pick up his third win of the year. He gave up three earned runs on eight hits, struck out four and walked five. Michael Martynik was denied his third win, taking the loss to drop to 2-2 on the year. He went seven and two thirds, gave up six earned runs on nine hits while striking out three and walking a whopping seven. "He shoulda been yanked a lot earlier; that's what I say," said nine year old Paul "Little Paulie" Rhigetti.

Both clubs came into this one with 9-6 records on the season, and the fans saw a classic pitcher's duel, with Paducah getting the winning run on a passed ball in the top of the tenth to move a game out of first place, and push Yucca into third place and in the process tightening things up in the early going of the Badlands Baseball Circuit. Phil Page pitched his heart out for Yucca, tossing ten and giving up one unearned run after Pee Wee Reese opened the inning with a double, moved to third on a groundout, then scored on a passed ball. Page gave up six hits, struck out eight and walked two. Ken Raffensberger, serving double duty as a starter and reliever, tossed two innings and allowed one hit in picking up the win. Paducah starter Si Johnson went eight and gave up three hits on six strikeouts.

Leading 1-0 after one, Sonora ganged up on Calico pitching to score five in the second, and added four more along the way to hand Calico a hard to swallow defeat, denying them their tenth win of the year. Ted wilks got the spot start for Sonora, and he took full advantage of the opportunity, going eight and allowing six runs, only one of which was earned. He gave up seven hits, struck out six and walked four to earn his first win of the season. Ed Chapman was tagged for six earned runs over six innings, allowing seven hits, and walking seven. Buck Fausett had three RBI for Sonora, who inches closer to .500 with a record of 7-9.
